Under-pressure UK PM Boris Johnson has today lost his parliamentary majority after Conservative MP Phillip Lee defected to the pro-EU Liberal Democrats. It comes at a critical time for the ruling Tories, who could face an emergency motion to take a no-deal Brexit off the table on Wednesday. Lee said that after a great deal of thought he had decided to leave the Conservatives amid concern over its direction since the Brexit vote. "Sadly, the Brexit process has helped to transform this once great Party into something more akin to a narrow faction, where an individual's 'conservatism' is measured by...

Angry Muslim American voters are tired of being ignored by the Democratic Party’s presidential candidates — even though they make up a fast-growing source of Democrat votes. Only two of the party’s White House contenders, Bernie Sanders and Julian Castro, agreed to speak at Saturday’s presidential forum at the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) which has drawn 30,000 attendees to Houston, Tex. this weekend.

Walmart said Tuesday it will discontinue all sales of handgun ammunition and sales of short-barrel rifle ammunition that can be used with military-style weapons, following two “horrific” shootings at Walmart stores this summer. It will also stop all handgun sales in Alaska, marking its complete exit from the handguns category. The biggest retailer in the world also is asking customers at Walmart and Sam’s Club to no longer openly carry firearms in stores, in states where “open carry” is allowed, unless they are authorized law enforcement officers. Open carry legislation is currently on the books in more than 26 states,...

Beto you know what else is F****d up. Forcing me to sell you a gun that you didn’t sell to me in the first place and to add insult to injury, the money you’d use for the buy back would be the money I paid in Taxes. Only to then turn and have to pay that same money back to you in taxes to fund this stupid little buyback. So technically, you’re not buying a d**n thing, you’re literally forcing me to pay to confiscate my own g*n leaving me defenseless and broke. Come to think that’s super f****d up.

**SNIP** The Washington establishment seems convinced that as a generic long-term issue requiring politicians to do something, climate change makes Republicans look out of the mainstream, but as a demand for massive upheaval on a tight planetary timeline, the Green New Deal makes Democrats look just as far out of the mainstream. And it’s exposing real tensions inside the Democratic Party—between center and left, congressional leaders and insurgents, labor groups and green groups, and even among various factions inside the Green New Deal movement. **SNIP** “Denying the science is not a sustainable position, and more Republicans need to face reality...

Radical liberation theologians push for overthrow of Catholic doctrine at Amazon synod September 3, 2019 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A group of aging priests and theologians associated with Latin American “liberation theology” who are involved in the preparation for Pope Francis’ upcoming “Pan-Amazon Synod” have produced a document arguing for the overthrow of Catholic doctrine in a variety of areas, LifeSite has learned. The document, called “Towards the Pan-Amazonian Synod: Challenges and Contributions from Latin America and the Caribbean,” was produced in April of this year as a result of a meeting in Bogota, Colombia, by theologians from two organizations promoting liberation...

Thanks to John Pepino, whom readers will recognize as the translator both of Louis Bouyer’s Memoirs and of Yves Chiron’s Bugnini, NLM is pleased to present a translation from French of a recent letter addressed by an Eastern Orthodox monk to a Benedictine monk who had presented him with a lengthy apologia for the papacy and for the necessity of returning to Rome. Neither monk is named. (The original document may be found at Le Salon Beige, where one can also find other pertinent articles.) The thoughtful and, at times, poignant reply of the Orthodox monk will surely be of...

Despite efforts to speed up baseball, the average time of a nine-inning game in Major League Baseball is three hours and five minutes. That equals the mark which was set in 2017, after which MLB and the players’ association responded by limiting the number of mound visits per game. Other time-saving measures including shortened breaks between innings and eliminating pitches being thrown during intentional walks have been imposed, but MLB games still drag on a snail’s pace. One of the biggest reasons games are taking so long is that batters are more focused on hitting home runs and pitchers are...

North Carolina’s political maps for the state legislature are unconstitutional and must be redrawn before the 2020 elections, a court has decided. A panel of judges struck down the maps Tuesday, in a 357-page ruling that focused on the level of political partisanship used to draw them. The maps were drawn in 2017 to replace previous maps, drawn in 2011, that had also been ruled unconstitutional. Both sets of maps were drawn by North Carolina’s Republican-led legislature. The judges found that “The North Carolina Supreme Court has long and consistently held that ‘our government is founded on the will of...

The announced changes come amid a wave of deadly shootings in the U.S., including two at Walmart stores this summer. Both companies are also calling on the government to strengthen background checks. “Kroger is respectfully asking that customers no longer openly carry firearms into our stores, other than authorized law enforcement officers,” Jessica Adelman, group vice president of corporate affairs, said in an emailed statement. “We are also...

The Trump administration has started the arduous process of cancelling $3.6 billion in military construction projects to fund its plans to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Defense Secretary Mark Esper began notifying lawmakers Tuesday which projects will get cancelled in their districts. Top Democrats immediately blasted the plan. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was among the first lawmakers to say his district will be impacted with funds cut for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. "This decision will harm already planned, important projects intended to support our service members at military installations in New York, across...
