<p>DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Rep. Steve King said Friday he stands by his recent comments about rape and incest that sparked bipartisan criticism but acknowledged he could have made his point in a "softer way."</p>
<p>Backed by supporters at a news conference in Des Moines, the Iowa Republican affirmed his belief that abortion should be outlawed with no exceptions for rape or incest. King faced criticism for his comment Aug. 14 that questioned whether there would be "any population of the world left" if not for births due to rape or incest.</p>

To the tune of “You’re so Vain” You walked into the party To see what April Ryan would talk about You strategically set up out of the way To take your video and then to get out You had an invitation to be there So you weren’t expecting a rout But April thinks she’s a queen, so she said “go get ‘em partner, go get ‘em partner” and You're in pain You probably think it’s wrong that he beat you You're in pain I'll bet you think think it’s wrong that he beat you Don't you? Don't you? Oh, they...

August 25 2019 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading 1 Is 66:18-21 Thus says the LORD:I know their works and their thoughts, and I come to gather nations of every language;they shall come and see my glory. I will set a sign among them;from them I will send fugitives to the nations:to Tarshish, Put and Lud, Mosoch, Tubal and Javan,to the distant coastlandsthat have never heard of my fame, or seen my glory;and they shall proclaim my glory among the nations. They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nationsas an offering to the LORD,on horses and...

Californians, what do you have to lose by voting for Trump?! It’s time for Democrats to defend the consequences of their democratic socialist policies that have ruined the state! After visiting my hometown of Los Angeles, California a couple of weeks ago, for the first time in decades, I returned to Florida absolutely convinced that Donald Trump and the Republican Party could recapture the state if the president would take Rush Limbaugh’s advice and campaign there. Everything that’s wrong with California is the fault of Democrats! They can’t blame Republicans for the mess they’ve created there! It’s a one-party state!...

By 2-to-1 vote, an Australian appellate court this week dismissed George Cardinal Pell’s appeal of his conviction on five counts of “historic” child sexual abuse. For Pell’s supporters, the decision can hardly be surprising. Given the way things had gone, a just outcome would have come as a shock. Prosecutors accused Pell of surprising two choirboys who were guzzling communion wine in the sacristy of the Melbourne cathedral immediately after Mass one Sunday in 1996. The cardinal was charged with forcing the boys to fellate him while he was still vested in archbishop’s robes. The allegations were utterly implausible —...

It began calmly enough. But as the Aug. 8 meeting of the Bronx Democratic County Committee progressed, a rift between members became apparent. In fact, several committee members argued later that the East Bronx meeting to fix what’s wrong with the BDCC put the problems of the political operation on full display. In the end, the committee approved a slate of changes proponents said would make the county Democrats’ processes and structure more accessible to members. It was the result of efforts that came to a head last September when a number of progressives, having their lineup of leadership nominees...

Please join with fellow FREEPERS to pray for President Trump, Vice-President Pence, and for America: Government, Family, Military, Business, Education, Churches, and the Media. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. (I John 5:14) Religion forum threads labeled “Prayer” are closed to debate of any kind.

After the bottom fell out of ticket sales, after the failure of promoters to actually promote the game and after neither team bothered to show up for a practice, the belief was everything had gone wrong for Winnipeg’s NFL pre-season game that could go wrong. Then the Oakland Raiders and Green Bay Packers took to the turf for their pre-game rituals at the home of the Blue Bombers, Thursday night. And what had been a bit of a gong show became an all-out comedy of errors. The lasting image of a night that was supposed to be about welcoming the...

Putting on its Victorian gentleman suit (pace Tom Wolfe), the Washington Post's editorial board tut-tuts a rich part of Washington, D.C. and its political patrons, for pulling out all stops to prevent construction of a child-migrant shelter in its fancy environs. MANY AMERICANS are rightly outraged by the Trump administration’s treatment of migrant children, who have been separated from parents and ill-treated by authorities. Democrats have been understandably eager to distance themselves from such policies — a stance that can result in knee-jerk opposition even to sensible practices in effect during the Obama administration. That might explain the nearly uniform outcry from Washington-area politicians incensed...

With the number of murders in Baltimore quickly approaching 300 (as it’s done annually for the past several years) and the total number of shootings nearing 700, interim Mayor Jack Young took a meeting with Governor Larry Hogan this week to ask for help. His Police Commissioner also attended. While everyone agreed that the subject was important and the meeting was productive, it remains to be seen what more the state can actually do if leaders in Baltimore aren’t willing to take steps to help themselves. (Baltimore Sun) Baltimore’s mayor and police commissioner met for more than an hour...

An odd little story surfaced this week over President Trump’s idea about buying Greenland. For some reason, a Republican senator felt the need to let some constituents in on a fact not previously reported on – he was the one who had the idea in the first place a year ago.Senator Tom Cotton was back home in Arkansas Wednesday and attended a luncheon hosted by an Arkansas-based news website. The inaugural Talk Business & Politics Power Lunch at the Red & Blue Events Center in Little Rock, Arkansas produced an interesting tidbit from Senator Cotton. When asked about the...

Some years ago, Dr. Tim Ball wrote that climate scientist Michael Mann “belongs in the state pen, not Penn State.” At issue was Mann’s famous “hockey stick” graph that purported to show a sudden and unprecedented 20th century warming trend. The hockey stick featured prominently in the IPCC’s Third Assessment Report (2001), but has since been shown to be wrong. The question, in my view, is whether it was an innocent mistake or deliberate fraud on Mann’s part. (Mann, I believe, continues to assert the accuracy of his debunked graph.) Mann sued Ball for libel in 2011. Principia Scientific now...

SAN FRANCISCO — The Democratic National Committee on Saturday quashed a push from climate activists and some national party members who want a 2020 presidential primary debate devoted exclusively to the climate crisis. The national party committee voted 222-137 at its summer meeting in San Francisco against a resolution that effectively would have rolled back debate rules set by Chairman Tom Perez and freed presidential candidates to participate in a climate-only debate. The move drew rebukes from the Sunrise Movement and other activists who say the party leadership is ignoring young voters' priorities. "The Democratic Party needs the energy and...

Former Vice President Joe Biden mistakenly praised the state of Vermont Saturday when asked about his impression of Keene, New Hampshire by reporters during a press gaggle. Video of the exchange shows Biden remarking about Vermont's "beauty" after an unseen reporter asks him for his "impression" of the town, which is located in southeastern New Hampshire, close to the state's border with Vermont. "I love this place. Look, what’s not to like about Vermont in terms of the beauty of it? And what a neat town, this is like a scenic, beautiful town. The mayor's been a good guy, everybody...

In February, the Ocearch team was denied a state permit to catch and tag great white sharks in state waters. In his letter denying the application, David Pierce, director of the state Division of Marine Fisheries, cited concerns with the team fishing for great whites in an area near public beaches. Without that permit, Ocearch, which has a federal research permit to catch, tag and collect biological samples from white sharks, was anchored outside state waters, 4½ miles off Nantucket. At the same time the bait on seven lines of Ocearch buoys and hooks was going untouched, beaches along the...
