The Chinese communist government must be feeling a sense a deja vu as Hong Kong's democracy protests gather strength. It was 30 years plus two months ago this summer that pro-democracy protesters gathered and then became a force on Tienanmen Square in Beijing. That protest saw peaceful Chinese citizens camp and sing and build a likeness of the Statue of Liberty to symbolize their quest for the freedoms we all too often take for granted: freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the freedom to be left alone. The ChiComs will surely have those...

Customs and Border Protection (CBP, which I still keep calling the Border Patrol for some reason) has been coming under fire from liberals over immigration enforcement, though probably not as frequently as ICE. Some recent criticism over the handling of illegal immigration raids on seven food processing companies in Mississippi appears to have set CBP back on their heels a bit. During an interview on State of the Union this weekend, acting CBP commissioner Mark Morgan pushed back on the description, saying that people shouldn’t call them “raids.†He prefers the term targeted law enforcement operations. (WaPo) Acting customs...

The ongoing protests in Hong Kong have grown recently, with the tactics of the protesters shifting in response to increasingly aggressive actions by the police. They’ve begun shutting down major roadways, as well as closing the airport for two straight days now. Their leader, Carrie Lam, appears to be completely ineffective in either satisfying the protester’s needs and getting them to disperse or gaining any concessions from China to ease the tensions. The Washington Post editorial board has a deep dive into the current state of affairs, claiming that China is the party that has “misread†the protests from the...

I am often approached by widows and widowers after the death of a spouse with a question similar to this one, which was submitted to me at my “Question and Answer” column in Our Sunday Visitor.I recently lost my husband of 46 years and long to be reunited with him one day. But some people have told me that our marriage ended with his death and that Jesus says we will not be married or considered spouses in heaven. This is difficult...

Obviously, the stranger who called Chris Cuomo “Fredo” touched a very sensitive nerve in the anchor for the third-rated cable news operation. As the son and brother of 2 governors of New York, Chris may feel himself an underachiever, perhaps occupying his position of prominence solely on the basis of his family ties. That could explain the vehemence, verbal thuggery, and victimology of the unhinged rant that followed. When it comes to mass shootings, America lives in two separate worlds. The first is the one of Gilroy, California, El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio among many others. They follow a familiar script: a white shooter using a high-powered weapon kills multiple victim and this carnage is quickly followed by public outrage, intensive on-site media coverage, and never-ending publicized pronouncements on gun violence, and, in recent years, condemnation of Trump’s alleged racism and xenophobia that fuels such carnage. The second universe consists of urban, black-on-black shootings, typically of the drive-by-shooting variety using handguns where relatively few are killed but...

Official estimates suggest that over 1 million people will illegally migrate into America in 2019. The Democrats welcome them with open arms -- they have even offered to give them "free" healthcare. In doing so they betray their most stalwart voters: black Americans. How? Illegal migrants compete directly with black Americans for jobs, causing unemployment and decreasing wages. Before discussing the economic impact of illegal immigration, how many aliens live in America? At the Hot Gates Pew Research suggests that some 11.1 million illegals reside within our borders. Although this falls in line with figures from the Department of...

I'm convinced that one day in the future, people will be studying how it was that the Left was so successful in manipulating language and redefining words. How was it that they were able to lie to the American people, while at the same time appearing not to lie, leaving them with no shred of doubt that they were being told the truth? Their ability to lie, and get away with doing so, is like a superhuman comic book power. They use this power with the same level of ease with which most of us breathe. "Repeat a lie often...

So what if we did get Bernie Sanders, a proud democratic socialist, as president next year? Or say we got Elizabeth Warren -- no socialist, perhaps, in the formal sense, but a lady given to the espousal of policies much like Bernie's? What if we got a socialist government? Would it be a good thing or a bad thing? I put it to you this way: It would be a very different thing, for one fundamental reason, a reason we should not glide past as we take in all the media's political blah-blah. The difference between socialism and capitalism, in...

1. President Trump can convincingly defeat any of the current candidates who come across as angry and somewhat crazy. Michelle Obama would be a formidable opponent. 2. She’s the one who supposedly can unite a divided party and protect her husband’s legacy, prevent the dismantling of his policies and place liberal justices on the Supreme Court. 3. She’s an attractive, charismatic and articulate former first lady who is a political celebrity worldwide, enjoying rock-star status. She recently was named “The Most Admired Woman in the World” by YouGov, a market research firm. Queen Elizabeth came in fourth, Melania Trump 19th....

As many of you already know, CNN’s Chris Cuomo erupted at a man who apparently called him “Fredo,” in a video that went viral Monday night. The encounter between Cuomo and the man happened at a Shelter Island bar on Sunday. “Punk-ass bitches from the right call me Fredo,” Cuomo told the man. “My name is Chris Cuomo. I’m an anchor on CNN. Fredo is from The Godfather. They use it as an Italian aspersion. Any of you Italian?” he continued. “It’s an insult to your f****** people. It’s like the N-word for us.” They went back and forth, and...

It's a simple question. But I haven't heard it asked. Now that he's (supposedly) dead, can the information on his tax returns be used by investigators and/or made public? I assume that he probably had to include his sources of income if he did file tax returns. I don't know. I'm just asking. ML/NJ

Democratic presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris marked the five-year anniversary of the Ferguson, Missouri, police shooting of Michael Brown last week with tweets claiming that the cop who shot Brown “murdered” the 18-year-old black man. But the evidence, including a report released by President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice, says otherwise. The protests in Ferguson drew national attention to the real problem of police violence and racial bias nationwide — the bigger movement Harris and Warren acknowledged with their tweets. Justice Department investigations after the shooting, though, found that the officer who shot Brown was legally justified, even...
