Posted on August 8, 2019August 8, 2019 by Msgr. Charles Pope What Was Moses’ Sin? At Thursday’s daily Mass (Thursday of the 18th week of the year) we read of the sin that excluded Moses from leading the people to the Promised Land. While there are some mysterious elements to it, one thing seems clear: the grumbling of the people got on Moses’ nerves. Indeed, grumbling often affects more than just the one doing the complaining. Through it, infectious negativity can be set loose. Even if only a small number are grousing, it can still incite discontent, anger, and/or...

A father of five who staunchly supported immigrants died when his motorcycle reportedly was hit by a Salvadoran motorist who sought sanctuary from deportation seven months ago in a Colorado Springs church. Sean Buchanan’s family grieved his death Thursday and the tragic irony of an Aug. 2 wreck that involved a member of the very community Buchanan so ardently supported. “Sean was an advocate for people who were trying to get into our country. He was a huge advocate,” said Amy Savage, a close family friend, standing in the family’s garage. “He just was a man who loved and accepted...

[Catholic Caucus] Pope Francis and Criminal Omission The Pope knows he's guilty A divorced woman with two teenage children remarried a man who in time started sexually abusing her daughter. Even though the daughter informed the mother of the abuse, the mother did nothing. When the daughter revealed the abuse to one of her high school teachers, it led not only to the arrest of her stepfather, but it also resulted in the mother losing custody of her daughter. The abuse the daughter experienced in this case is similar to the sex abuse of many minors, seminarians and young adults in the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, most Church officials who failed to investigate and report clerical sex abuse continue to...

Friday, August 9, 2019 WASHINGTON, D.C. - Yesterday, Senator Rick Scott sent a letter to Attorney General William Barr urging him to seek answers from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray. Senator Scott has been seeking information on what steps the FBI has taken to address critical deficiencies in its handling of actionable intelligence on the perpetrators of acts of mass violence in Florida, including the tragic shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Pulse Nightclub. This letter follows an inadequate response from the FBI to Senator Scott's continued requests for this information.

An elderly couple in Washington state was found dead in their home in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said, and police say they discovered notes about the couple’s struggle to afford necessary medical care. A 77-year-old man living near Ferndale, Washington, called 911 Wednesday morning and told the dispatcher he was contemplating suicide, according to a Facebook post from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff's office wrote that the dispatcher tried to keep the man on the line, but he hung up saying, “We will be in the front bedroom.” Deputies arrived at the scene minutes later, according to the...

"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary." —H.L. MenckenThe country is again in an uproar following the latest mass shootings in Texas and Ohio. In response to the hysterical clamor in the media to "do something," politicians in both the Democratic and Republican Parties want (yet again!) more gun laws. Republicans, including President Trump, are proposing a "red flag" confiscation law that would enable police to summarily seize an individual's guns based on hearsay....

Former Planned Parenthood medical assistant Ta’Lisa Hairston, recently highlighted in a New York Times expose detailing how she and other pregnant staffers experienced discrimination while working for the abortion corporation, has spoken out in an interview for the first time since the article was published. Hairston told the Times that Planned Parenthood ignored her obstetrician’s orders requiring her to take frequent breaks. Hairston gave birth prematurely and told the Times that just two months later, Planned Parenthood “began calling her at home, telling her to return to work early.” She further describes the harassment and stress she suffered at the...

DES MOINES, Iowa — Joe Biden called for the United States to increase the number of immigrants and refugees from its current acceptance rate. During a campaign stop hosted by the Asian & Latino Coalition PAC Thursday night, the former vice president pointed to nations with present conflicts that the U.S. should be accepting refugees from. “We should change the priorities in terms of whether or not who is able to get in line. We should be uniting family. We should be uniting them. We should also be looking at the whole idea of what's going on in terms of...

The destruction of the truth in America has been underway for decades, but until recent years the truth has had the upper hand. This can be attributed in large parts to conservatives, but the shift in media sentiment and the rise of Trump Derangement Syndrome has made it more challenging than ever in our history to break through the media jamming of lies and expose more Americans to the truth. Under normal circumstances, uncorroborated rumors aren’t enough to spark a report. But these are strange times and the circumstances are far from normal, especially as they pertain to the radical...

Google doesn’t exactly have a reputation for being pro-life. It has shown a clear bias against pregnancy centers; originally categorized the pro-life film “Unplanned” as “propaganda;” ditched an artificial intelligence advisory council after a conservative, pro-life Black female leader was included on it; and has, via YouTube, suppressed Live Action’s pro-life message. Now, one Google employee has written a memo claiming she was discriminated against for becoming pregnant. Pregnancy discrimination persists, despite being illegal in the United States. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) means that an employer cannot show any kind of discrimination against a woman because she is pregnant,...

President Trump on Friday called for "intelligent background checks" on gun purchases in response to a string of mass shootings across the country, expressing confidence that Congress would come together on action. “Frankly, we need intelligent background checks,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a fundraiser in the Hamptons. "This isn't a question of NRA, Republican or Democrat," he added. Trump said he’s spoken with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), he said was “totally on board.” The president also said he had a "great talk" with both Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader...

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem (Old Testament) 2 Kings 14 Amaziah King of Judah 14 In the second year of Jehoash[a] son of Jehoahaz king of Israel, Amaziah son of Joash king of Judah began to reign. 2 He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan; she was from Jerusalem. 3 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not as his father David had done. In everything he followed the example of his father Joash. 4 The high places, however, were not removed; the...

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his allies are embracing a fight with the media and Twitter that has struck a nerve among Republicans. Taking fierce criticism over election security, a series of campaign imbroglios and the GOP leader’s response to two mass shootings, the normally tightlipped McConnell and his team have repeatedly punched back at what they view as unfair coverage and leaned into a fight with the social media giant. Those tensions, which had been simmering for weeks, erupted on Thursday after the McConnell campaign found itself locked out of Twitter after it shared a video of...

With every mass shooting, after the obligatory "Orange Man Bad" screams, we hear that some particular change in the law would somehow be the perfect answer. After El Paso, we are told that that "Universal Background Checks" is the panacea. Not to be outdone, other voices screamed that we had to ban large-capacity magazines. And on, and on… Of course, these loud shouts are emotional pleas of "Vote for Me! I'll Do Something!" They have nothing whatever to do with rational thought (HT to Andrew Wilkow). My task is to develop the facts in a way that allows me to...

Venezuela’s crisis has been marked by corruption, hyperinflation, one of the world’s highest homicide rates, food and medicine shortages and the largest exodus “in the recent history of Latin America,” according to the U.N. Refugee Agency. Its chances to recover may start with President Nicolas Maduro stepping down or being forcibly removed — either by the opposition or through foreign military intervention. But that would just be the first step to get the ruined economy on the road to recovery. A major course of economic shock therapy will be required.

Video Killed The Radio Star. Another one. We're six months or so into the podcast-only era of the erstwhile Laura Ingraham Show. For many she was our favorite red-in-tooth-and-claw conservative female who would laugh and sputter, as appropriate, at the lefty Journolist/NYT/WaPo mendacious gambit of the day as well as their constant gaslighting efforts. As a single mother of three, she often noted her lack of sleep and grueling schedule and that was BEFORE the Fox primetime show began. The handwriting was on the wall for months before she announced the retirement of her daily 3-hour radio show which required...
