With every mass shooting, after the obligatory "Orange Man Bad" screams, we hear that some particular change in the law would somehow be the perfect answer. After El Paso, we are told that that "Universal Background Checks" is the panacea. Not to be outdone, other voices screamed that we had to ban large-capacity magazines. And on, and on
Of course, these loud shouts are emotional pleas of "Vote for Me! I'll Do Something!" They have nothing whatever to do with rational thought (HT to Andrew Wilkow). My task is to develop the facts in a way that allows me to present logical proposals that may have the prospect of remedying the supposed "epidemic" of mass shootings. The fact that mass shootings are not increasing and that the U.S. is not the king of mass shootings is unimportant. Any mass shooting is a tragedy, and if we can avoid tragedies, we should.
The most popular diagnosis is that the majority of shooters are "mentally ill." There are several problems with this glib answer. What sort of mental illness are we talking about? Depression? INCEL? Paranoid schizophrenia? This list is enormous. And most people with each of those pathologies do not commit crimes.
But lets suppose that we can actually identify mentally ill persons with violent ideation. How many of those go on to act on those violent thoughts? Mathematically, this is the numerator. But how many do not act on those ideas? This is the denominator, and we don't know it. If we find that for every person who acts out, there is only one that doesn't, that's very different from one in a hundred, one in a thousand, or one in ten thousand.

A LOT more people carrying will essentially eliminate them.
There are probably enough people, who CAN carry right now, to make this effective within a few days.
That is it, and that is all.
ONLY repentance of our sins, and calling upon our Creator will draw Him back, from His judgement upon our nation.
God WILL heal our nation, but first we must welcome Him back into our government, our schools, our homes, our churches, and into our hearts.
Nothing is going to stop it, because it hurts us, we’ve shown that it hurts us, and they want to hurt us.
i’m gonna go out on a limb here but anyone that intent on causing a massacre will get a weapon, background check or not.
There Always that part of town to go to if you want to buy something illegally.
I just don’t think people hell bent on mass murder are gonna say “damn, I didn’t pass the background check. Oh well. Forget that whole massacre thing”
There always have been and there always will be nuts and maniacs and yes, just plain evil people in the world.
There’s 300 million plus people here.
Hundreds of millions of guns.
I’d say these things happen VERY, VERY infrequently.
Enough weapons lost by or stolen from law enforcement and the National Guard are on the black market to keep the crazies who do such things well equipped for fifty years.
I’m really surprised — this article hits it on the head: “We need to raise up more good guys with guns.”
I would like to see more institutionalization of the mentally ill, but I think it is extremely problematic to tie such an initiative to violence, mass shooting, or gun control.
I think crazy people making a nuisance of themsleves in the street need treatment.
I think public safety would benefit from more good guys with guns.
Two separate things.
Ill take God-fearing for $500 please, Alex.
do away with not guilty for reason of insanity and implement guilty for reasons of insanity and lock them up or do them in...
if they cannot play nice, send them to a sandbox six feet deep.
I am of the opinion that mathematically speaking, it is only necessary to have a small percentage of the population Armed and Carrying (A&C). Over time, the criminal elements learn that they have a higher probability of being ventilated, they alter their activity.
There will always be that crazy mad person who suddenly snaps and is not detected by the system.
The most accurate diagnosis is that the majority of these shootings are not organic.
Nothing will stop mass killings. No amount of laws will deter the determined person from doing what he wants.
Eliminate the incessant media coverage for a start.
You are right. Creating defensible spaces and defending them is the “raise the bridge” solution.
Trying to prevent crazy people from acting out is the “lower the river” solution. You’d have to try to change the whole physical geography to lower the river. You’d have to try to get a Constitutional amendment overturning the 4th and 5th Amendments to ride herd on all the crazy people.
You’d have to think the congress and our elites WANTED to eliminate the 4th and 5th...
Cuz that certainly sounds like what they’re planning...
Nope.
Crap. There was an armed officer at the Florida high school who was supposed to defend the students and he hid. In Dayton the police responded and killed the shooter in less than 30 seconds after his first shot and he still had a chance to kill 9 and wound dozens more. It's hard to believe that a quicker response time is possible with untrained civilians much less trained police.
One could remove all guns, and you’d still have mass killings.
Read up on the Bath, Michigan bombing in 1927. Forty-five dead. Fifty-eight wounded.
With all the pretender rocket-scientists around....eliminating guns does absolutely nothing.
The day will come when guns will be the least of our worries.
