The United States and Canada had more than $844 billion invested in one another’s economies as of 2017. Our two countries’ deep economic ties will only become stronger under the new USMCA, which will be the largest trade agreement in history. USMCA contains the strongest and most comprehensive labor and environmental chapters of any trade agreement ever negotiated. The agreement is a huge win for...

For nearly a century, an oak in a German forest has helped lonely people find love—including the mailman who delivers its letters. Every morning for 20 years, Karl-Heinz Martens steered his yellow mail truck through the narrow streets of Eutin, a market town arranged around a little castle in northern Germany, near the Baltic Sea. On his route, Martens would drive through miles of farms and fields before disappearing into a deep, enchanted forest, where he unlocked a gate using a special key and reversed into his parking spot—as all mailmen do—facing outward to ensure a quick exit. As he...

The diversity enforcers at Netflix has decided that viewers haven’t been hammered with enough LGBTQIA+ representation. Apparently, last year’s 53 shows with LGBT characters weren’t enough. To remedy this gross inequity, Netflix signed a major deal with transgender activist Janet Mock yesterday. Mock -- director, writer, and producer of FX’s Pose -- has been given a three-year multimillion-dollar pact that gives her the power to develop and call creative shots for new shows at the largest streaming service. According to Variety:

Well, after wasting taxpayer money and Hope Hicks' time on Wednesday, the House Judiciary Committee has released the full transcript of Trump's former communications director's testimony. It largely revealed absolutely nothing new, but it also confirmed what we all already knew -- New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler is an absolute jerk. In Michael Wolff's now discredited book, 'Fire and Fury,' the author claims that Hicks, one of President Trump's closest allies and a key player in the 2016 campaign, had an on-and-off relationship with Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski who happens to be married. The supposed affair was never...

Two Democratic senators want to claw back some of the Republican tax law, to create jobs for people who have been unemployed for a long period of time. Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) introduced the Long-Term Unemployment Act__ on Thursday. The bill would create a federal program designed to generate jobs for people who have been out of work for at least six months. The bill complements — and could eventually merge with — Wyden’s ELEVATE Act, which they say also aims to eliminate barriers to the labor market. The senators’ plan would subsidize a job...

Thomas Paprocki, the bishop of Springfield (the state capital of Illinois), has issued a decree barring the Illinois State Senate President and House Speaker—both ostensibly Catholics—from receiving Communion in the diocese. The June 2 decision took place in response to enactment of abortion legislation codifying in state law an unlimited abortion liberty through birth, in the event that Roe et al. v. Wade would be judicially modified. Paprocki’s decree also states that Illinois Catholic legislators who voted for the bill should also not receive Communion until they first are “reconciled to Christ and the Church.” With the uptick in state...

(Reuters) - Oregon’s Democratic governor dispatched the state police on Thursday to bring back to the legislature Senate Republicans who left the Capitol in order to scuttle a vote on climate change legislation. Democrats are unable to vote on the legislation because state Senate rules require a quorum of at least 20 members to be present for action to be taken on bills. Governor Kate Brown said in a statement she had acted in response from a request from Senate Democrats for state police to bring their colleagues back.

JERUSALEM - Following the successful cooperation on the 2016 restoration of the Edicule in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the leaders of the three churches who serve as guardians of the holy site have signed an agreement to continue with restorations, this time on the pavement and foundations around the tomb. The Edicule shrine is revered by Christians as the site of the remains of the cave where Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. During its 10-month restoration, it was determined that the 19th-century structure remained endangered because of the humidity of the soil beneath the foundations...

Instead of listening to the concerns of some who felt the term “concentration camps” conjures up images of the Holocaust, Ocasio-Cortez doubled down by tweeting numerous Jews who agreed. U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaks to reporters Sometimes it feels like every day brings yet another issue where Jews, Jewish history and antisemitism are at the forefront of American politics. Partly this is due to the ease with which comments flow across social media. But it also is a rising problem of American politicians, actors, professors and commentators constantly making bad, insensitive and sometimes hateful comments against Jews or Jewish...

The proof is in the pee. A federally funded study has confirmed, not surprisingly, that marijuana use went up in Washington state after its first legal pot stores opened in 2014. In fact, consumption appeared to double, at least in one major city, over three years — a conclusion scientists reached by way of the unglamorous work of analyzing raw sewage. “It’s stinky,” said lead author Dan Burgard, a chemist at the University of Puget Sound. “But we’ve worked with urine, we’ve worked with wastewater, and we’ve worked with port-a-potties. It’s not as bad a port-a-potties.” The research entailed driving...

'Everyone knows that somewhere out there extremely dangerous people are running around who could attack again at any time' Many Christians in Sri Lanka are still too scared to go to church – in spite of security put in place following the Easter Day bombings. Returning from a fact-finding and project-assessment trip to the country, Veronique Vogel, head of Sri Lanka projects for the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need, said: “Many told me that they are afraid to enter a church or feel fear when they hear bells ringing.” She described a sense of tension in the...
