  • KFC's secret recipe for Africa

With over 1,000 restaurants in the continent, KFC is the leading fast food chain in Africa. But its dominance is limited to South Africa, home to about 80 percent of them. Despite its success, the company faces many challenges as they try to establish the brand in other regions, for example by making sure its food is relevant and recognizable to Africans. Serving jollof rice, a spicy dish native to West Africa, is one way in which KFC is improvising to win over palates in Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria.
  • N. Korea demands peace treaty for stopping nuke tests

North Korea said it could stop its nuclear tests in exchange for signing a peace treaty with the U.S. and a stop to annual military exercises between the U.S. and South Korea. The North's statement carried by the state media late Friday was a repeat of past offers that have been rejected by the U.S., which wants Pyongyang to commit to a complete abandonment of nuclear weapons. An unnamed spokesman of the North's Foreign Ministry called the purported hydrogen bomb test on Jan. 6 a justifiable move to ensure its survival against external threats. ...

Last weekend my now deceased brother's daughter contacted the family. She was given up at birth, but her older brother never was. I am NOT happy about revisiting the circumstances or the results and demise of my brother, her father, with her. Giving a child up for adoption is almost like committing suicide. It is the last out...for the future. I have no way of candy coating her biological father. He was beyond evil in many ways. So far so, that he is the only reason I installed an alarm system on my house at the time. And he was...

The European Court of Human Rights has set an interesting predcedent for workplace internet use by ruling in favour of a company that accessed its employees personal online communications. In the case brought forward by Romanian national Bogdan Mihai Bărbulescu in 2007, the court argued that his employer was within its rights to access messages he had sent via Yahoo Messenger during work hours. Judges said it was legal because the employer had the right to “check the manner in which its employees complete their professional tasks”. Even though he was using Yahoo Messenger to chat with his fiancee and...
  • Was Donald Trump Always A Stalking Horse For Ted Cruz?

How did Donald Trump get this far? He's talented, to be sure, but he also had a little help from his friends. Despite my strong urging (and the pleas of others), top conservative talkers generally looked the other way while Trump grew into a juggernaut that possibly cannot be stopped. These top talkers might have strangled the populist baby in the crib; instead, they provided him cover (without ever officially endorsing him or taking responsibility for his irresponsible rhetoric). In case you've forgotten, way back in December, Guy Benson described it thus: Here's how the coy game has worked: When...
  • Polls show most Germans fear refugee burden too great

Most Germans now doubt their country's ability to cope with a record migrant influx, and fear refugees more, after the New Year's Eve mass assaults on women in Cologne, opinion polls released Friday show. A survey by public broadcaster ZDF found that 60 percent of respondents believe Germany cannot cope with the large numbers of new arrivals, which reached 1.1 million in 2015. The Cologne attacks clearly had an impact, the broadcaster said, as only 46 percent of people surveyed in December felt that way. The poll of 1,203 people over January 12 to 14 also found that a majority...
  • Should lottery winners' names be secret? States debate issue

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Even a jackpot isn't enough to buy anonymity for many lottery winners, whose names are often made public by state law. But now it's becoming increasingly possible for big winners to hide their identity, and lottery executives are trying to strike a balance between ensuring privacy and safety while still proving to the public that real people can win. Jackpot winners "get a big old target painted on their backs," said Andrew Stoltmann, an Illinois attorney who has represented winners. When their names are released "they get harassed and harangued into some horrifically bad investments."

Not one person in America has yet voted for Donald Trump, but brace yourself: people are betting good money that he's going to sweep the Republican party nomination. Users of PredictIt, who bet real money on their expectations of political outcomes, say Trump has a 44% chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination. That's 14 percentage points higher than the candidate in second place on the PredictIt market, Sen. Marco Rubio, who users say has a 30% chance.

Channel 2 Action News has learned that the Cobb County Police Department will discipline a police officer accused of telling an African-American driver he didn't care about "your people." During a Nov. 16 traffic stop, Officer Maurice Lawson traded words with a driver. According to police, at the end of the traffic stop, Lawson could be heard saying, “Please go away to Fulton County. I don’t care about you (or your) people.” Community activists have made it clear that they wanted nothing less than Lawson's firing for this incident. The Cobb County Police Department announced Lawson will be suspended 80...

Don’t give up the ship! Fight her until she sinks!” Last Words of Captain James Lawrence, USS Chesapeake, June 1813 I think I can speak for most Americans, that the sight of US Navy sailors on their knees, hands on their heads, surrendering to the Iranians is absolutely sickening. What happened last week in the Persian Gulf is an absolute disgrace to the US Navy and the United States of America and is an insult to the brave sailors of the US Navy who gave their lives in previous conflicts. Frankly, I don’t care what the excuses are. The fact...

DALLAS (CBS11) – The political question whether Texas Senator Ted Cruz can be President may now become a legal drama, too. Houston attorney Newton Schwartz filed a federal lawsuit against Cruz asking the judge to declare the Republican presidential candidate ineligible to become President. “Just real simple. A one sentence ruling. He is eligible and is natural born citizen or he is not a natural born citizen.” Schwartz said the Supreme Court hasn’t defined what a natural born citizen is.

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower Friday, locking in the worst 10-day start to a calendar year ever, as oil prices plunged and investors worried about slowing growth in the U.S. During the course of the session, the S&P 500 broke below its Aug. 24 low—which several market strategists said would be tantamount to a major sell signal—to trade at its lowest level since October 2014. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was briefly down as much as 537 points.

For me, the most interesting part of the most recent debate was the part where he seemed to indicate that he couldn't ask Cruz to be Vice President until he dealt with the citizenship issue, which could derail an otherwise pleasant association. Just being practical. But no where have I heard any reference to this, what I would consider to be an extremely interesting comment, not challenged or denied by Cruz.
