What was a nine-point advantage for Bob McDonnell in the Virginia governor’s race two weeks ago is now down to two, according to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports released Thursday afternoon. The poll has McDonnell’s lead at 48 percent to 46 percent for Creigh Deeds. McDonnell led two weeks ago by a 51 percent-to-42 percent margin. The shift seems to be the result of voter reaction to the thesis that McDonnell wrote in 1989 as a 34-year-old graduate student at the conservative Regent University that laid out a blueprint for social-conservative action in the political arena that also spelled...

President Obama has pledged medical-malpractice reform as part of his overhaul of the nation's health-care system. Defensive medicine is estimated to waste $200 billion a year that otherwise could be spent curing the sick, mending the injured or even insuring the uninsured. Our nation is blessed with many hundreds of unbiased people qualified to lead this tort-reform effort. After thinking about it for a day, the president picked Kathleen Sebelius, his Health and Human Services secretary who before she was governor of Kansas served eight years as president of the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association. Surprised? Don't be. The trial lawyers...

WASHINGTON -- In her maiden Supreme Court appearance last week, Justice Sonia Sotomayor made a provocative comment that probed the foundations of corporate law. During arguments in a campaign-finance case, the court's majority conservatives seemed persuaded that corporations have broad First Amendment rights and that recent precedents upholding limits on corporate political spending should be overruled. But Justice Sotomayor suggested the majority might have it all wrong -- and that instead the court should reconsider the 19th century rulings that first afforded corporations the same rights flesh-and-blood people have. Judges "created corporations as persons, gave birth to corporations as persons,"...

Immigration advocates are wondering if Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's pick for a temporary Senate seat will be as friendly to their cause as the outgoing Sen. Mel Martinez was. America's Voice issued a statement today asking if Crist appointee George LeMieux will be favorable to the kind of immigration reform that would allow for the legalization of millions of undocumented immigrants -- such as Sen. Martinez had championed. That much is not clear, since Crist has made statements about supporting his party's outreach to the Hispanic community, but has stayed away from the controversial subject of immigration reform -- an...

BOULDER—Challenging conventional wisdom, new research finds that the number of sunspots provides an incomplete measure of changes in the Sun's impact on Earth over the course of the 11-year solar cycle. The study, led by scientists at the High Altitude Observatory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Michigan, finds that Earth was bombarded last year with high levels of solar energy at a time when the Sun was in an unusually quiet phase and sunspots had virtually disappeared. "The Sun continues to surprise us," says NCAR scientist Sarah Gibson, the lead author. "The solar...

(Sept. 17, 2009) — Dr. Orly Taitz, counsel for Captain Connie Rhodes, M.D, filed today an Emergency Request for Stay of Deployment, pending the filing of a Motion for Re-Hearing, in the Case Rhodes vs. Mac Donald. Yesterday, Judge Clay D. Land garnered nationally notoriety for his rejection of Captain’s Rhodes’ case, with a severe ruling that was widely faulted by legal experts across the nation. Attorney Taitz in today’s filings details the errors of Land’s ruling. What follows is The Post & Email’s summary of Tatiz’s Motions, using a copy forwarded us, by Mr. Neil B. Turner. First, Attorney...

We can all agree Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., was out of line and embarrassed himself by shouting "You lie!" during President Obama's address to Congress last week. Decorum demands a certain level of civility in The People's House and respect for the office of the presidency, even if the words Rep. Wilson spoke were true. But in the uproar among "journalists," Democrats and race hustlers over his outburst, a few points have been lost. First, President Obama took time in his "I-still-believe-we-can-replace-acrimony-with-civility" speech to call former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a liar: "The best example is the claim, made not...

Dalton, a squirrel monkey treated with gene therapy, enjoys his new colour sense.Neitz Laboratory Researchers have used gene therapy to restore colour vision in two adult monkeys that have been unable to distinguish between red and green hues since birth — raising the hope of curing colour blindness and other visual disorders in humans."This is a truly amazing study," says András Komáromy, a vision researcher and veterinary ophthalmologist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the research. "If we can target gene expression specifically to cones [in humans] then this has a tremendous implication."About 1...

Dear Friends: My family and I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support that we have received over the past week or so. I resigned from the White House on Sept. 6, and I have remained silent since then--in keeping with my promise not to be a distraction during a key moment in the Obama Presidency. Over the past several days, however, many people have been asking how they can help and what they can do. The main thing is this: please do everything you can to support both President Obama and the green jobs movement....

In symbolically occupying Shell's oilsands operations yesterday in northern Alberta, while Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama were meeting in Washington, Greenpeace said it was sending a message that "real climate leaders don't buy tar sands." But to which "climate leaders" is Greenpeace referring? To Obama, whose State Department recently issued a presidential permit granting Enbridge the right to proceed with its $3.3-billion Alberta Clipper pipeline to deliver crude oil from the oilsands to the U.S.? To Norway, held up to Canadians as a model of environmental responsibility for its carbon tax, whose state-owned power company, StatoilHydro...

Doctor opposition to health care overhaul proposals is broad and deep, revealing concerns not just about soaring costs, declining care, possible rationing and a lack of limits on malpractice suits, but also about government competence and motives, detailed responses to a new IBD/TIPP Poll show. As reported Wednesday, 65% of the 1,376 practicing physicians who responded to a mailed questionnaire over the last two weeks said they opposed health care plans that have emerged from the administration and Congress. Just 33% supported them. Perhaps the most shocking result: 45% of these professionals said they would consider closing their practices or...
