Toss-up: New Poll Has McDonnell-Deeds Race Too Close To Call
Augusta Free Press ^ | 9/17/09

What was a nine-point advantage for Bob McDonnell in the Virginia governor’s race two weeks ago is now down to two, according to a new poll by Rasmussen Reports released Thursday afternoon.

The poll has McDonnell’s lead at 48 percent to 46 percent for Creigh Deeds. McDonnell led two weeks ago by a 51 percent-to-42 percent margin.

The shift seems to be the result of voter reaction to the thesis that McDonnell wrote in 1989 as a 34-year-old graduate student at the conservative Regent University that laid out a blueprint for social-conservative action in the political arena that also spelled out McDonnell’s views on working women, reproductive choice and gays and lesbians.

Fifty-two percent of those surveyed told Rasmussen that the thesis is at least somewhat important in terms of how they will vote. The number of unaffiliated voters who consider the thesis to be important is 47 percent....

C’mon, Virginians — are you seriously going to put another Democrat Governor in office, after the last two?! Warner was an economic disaster (I know, I worked for the state at the time), and Kaine is just downright useless.

Definitely a double standard. Notice the same libs who want us to refuse to accept that McDonnell has changed his views are themselves willing to accept that Byrd changed his views?

Saying that the government ought to privilege marriage over other kinds of arrangements for making/raising children is just common sense. To Democrats, of course, it’s just nutty.

Crazy. Van Jones was allowed only months (or weeks) to have changed his views, but 20 years isn’t enough for a Republican.

All too familiar, this tightening up. Any VA freepers, check your voting rolls, especially absentee. Probably lots of 2008 ACORN registrations still there.

Time Kaine has been the real disaster...I kinda liked Warner as a governor. On the other hand, Tim Kaine displayed his true ultra liberal roots and Obama ties when he temporarily stopped all executions in Virginia, including one of a convicted police killer! He also has been at the forefront of agreeing with New York;s criticism on the accessibility of Virginia firearm sales. He's a complete and utter fool that's being boosted by the national Democratic party for a higher office. At least Warner was a success in business before and has shown some conservative Blue Dog spine (along with Webb) when they both voted to extend the right to carry concealed weapons into other states (as the Constitution permits).

If Virginia elects another dim... the Republic is dead... we have no chance... communism will rule the day and civil war will break out. Bank on it! It will be a predictor of what is to come. Seems America wants to be cuba or worse.

We will have no chance to survive as a Nation then. I pray it is not so... but I fear you are correct. I am beginning to hate Virginia.

Personally, I think part of the problem is that McDonnell is spending too much time on this, instead of sticking to his issues.

All his commercials talk about the thesis, in a way that makes it sound like the thesis was a bad thing that he had to answer for.

You don’t win by being defensive.

His commercials don’t all mention the thesis. See below:

I think it’s high time we act on his suggestion to sell state liquor stores to give us working capital.

All he is saying about the thesis is that Deeds keeps bringing it up because he doesn’t have any other plans or issues. And that’s a fact.

At today’s (okay, now it’s yesterday’s) debate, the audience, media included, groaned when Deeds brought up the thesis.

The latest TV ad, airing in NOVA, says nothing about the thesis:
