Los Angeles, CA (BANG) - Johnny Depp can't look at himself in the mirror. The "Public Enemies" star - widely considered to be one of Hollywood's hottest men - avoids examining his appearance and even hates seeing his movies. He said: "If I can avoid the mirror when I brush my teeth in the morning I will. I find security and safety in the most profound degree of ignorance. If you can just stay ignorant about just about anything you will be OK. Just keep walking forward." "It is OK to notice things, but to judge things will bog you...

Imagine a state in which you must register your name and address with the authorities, just so they can find you in case you break the law. In an age when bills vaunting protections for privacy abound, and when surveys of consumers rank privacy as a top concern, could that happen here? It is already happening. When we rely on the federal government to solve our problems, we invite it to intrude upon our privacy. We are asking Big Brother to come in and make himself at home. — How Big Brother Began, Solveig Singleton, Cato Institute Changes in technology...

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - An Appeals court admonished a federal judge on Thursday for keeping sexually explicit material in a home computer that was publicly accessible. Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, had called for a judicial misconduct investigation into his own actions June 2008 in response to a Los Angeles Times story the same year that said sexually explicit material was posted on his website at the same time as he was presiding over an obscenity trial in Los Angeles. In response to the report, Kozinski immediately suspended the obscenity trial to...

Christian Doctrine and how the left twists it politically The issues – There are a lot of issues to be covered in this article such as abortion, so called gay issues, taxes, socialized medicine and other social programs, illegal criminal invaders. (all verses use New King James Version for accuracy and understanding. Other versions of the bible are vague and unclear. KJV is the most accurate that one could use, but it is difficult for anyone to understand, so I struck a balance with something that was with original intent of scripture and the teaching of God, but easier for...

Ron Paul's legislative history is a lesson in principled failure. Among the bills he has co-sponsored: ending U.S. cooperation with the United Nations, a repeal of antitrust law "to restore the inherent benefits of the market economy," and stripping the government of the right to set a minimum wage. Just last week, he again introduced a bill "to repeal the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990," which would presumably make schools less safe but which would reinforce our right to bear arms. For Paul, ideology almost always trumps politics. None of these bills, I should note, have picked up much...

Correction: He’s a “little concerned.” This from a guy who, not two months ago, declared that “Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less” and who even here responds to a clip of him speaking at the 1996 GOP convention by announcing, “I don’t like slogans anymore like ‘limited government’” — before proceeding to voice his worries about “additional government.” Exit question: How seriously should we take someone who makes Mark Sanford sound coherent?

Perihelion and Aphelion Credit & Copyright: Enrique Luque Cervigón Explanation: This year Aphelion, the point in Earth's elliptical orbit when it is farthest from the Sun, occurs tomorrow, July 4th. Of course, that doesn't affect the seasons on our fair planet. Those are determined by the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation and not Earth's distance from the Sun, so July is still winter in the south and summer in northern hemisphere. But it does mean that on July 4th the Sun will be at its smallest apparent size. This composite neatly compares two pictures of the Sun taken with...

The Big Fix – Part Three RIGGED, ILLEGAL, RACIAL, and INTRUSIVE Strike One. In violation of Article 1, Section 2, of the U.S. Constitution, President Barack Obama has assumed complete control of the 2010 Census. This Article, which concerns the legislative rather than executive branch of government, stipulates that the “enumeration” be conducted by a commerce official under the supervision of the Senate and the House of Representations. It reads: Representation and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers … . The actual Enumeration shall be...

LONDON: The smell of fear really does exist, according to a new study, which also suggests that being terrified is infectious. The study, conducted by Dr Bettina Pause and colleagues at the University of Dusseldorf in Germany, suggests that people subconsciously detect whether others are scared by picking up chemicals they release from their bodies. Researchers believe the signals can be contagious and can spread around a group. For the study, researchers put cotton pads under the armpits of 49 student volunteers before they were due to start a university exam, reports the Telegraph. Pause and colleagues also collected sweat...

NEW HAVEN — The two dozen firefighters who packed into Humphrey’s East Restaurant were celebrating a coming marriage, drinking and jawboning in the boisterous style of large men with risky jobs, but Lt. Ben Vargas spent the evening trying to escape the tension surrounding his presence. During a trip to the bathroom, he found himself facing another man. Without warning, the first punch landed. When Lieutenant Vargas awoke, bloodied and splayed on the grimy floor, he was taken to the hospital. Lieutenant Vargas believes the attack, five years ago, was orchestrated by a black firefighter in retaliation for his having...

Nope....no bias here: (h/t Gateway Pundit) House of Pain: GOP's Class of '94 The sex scandals that have tarnished Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) and Gov. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) don’t appear to have much in common. Yet there is one thread that binds them together: Both Ensign and Sanford were members of the famed Republican House class of 1994, as well as its latest casualties. As it turns out, the pressures and demands of political life have inflicted devastating damage not only on the Ensign and Sanford families, but on the families of many of the 71 other freshmen who formed...

*** Madoff's victims know their tormentor will never be released from prison. Judge Denny Chin's sentence was appropriate.....Madoff was one of the most vile and disgusting individuals to ever enter the criminal-justice system. A week before his audience with Pope Benedict XVI, President Barack Obama addressed eight questions from Catholic reporters and editors on July 2. The president began: I've had a wonderful conversation with the Pope over the phone right after the election. And we in some ways see this as a meeting with any other government-- the government of the Holy See. There are going to be areas where we've got deep agreements; there are going to be some areas where we've got some disagreements. So in that sense there's a government-to-government relationship that is already very strong and we want...

Bruce Fleming has been an English professor at the United States Naval Academy for twenty-two years and has served as a member of USNA’s Admissions Board. He has expressed concerns over the Academy’s admissions process which he strongly believes places too much emphasis on racial diversity at the cost of quality students. He explains these concerns as follows: Here’s a question: would you rather be defended by the officer with high all-around predictors (including leadership and athletics in addition to grades and test scores), or low ones? I bet you think I’m joking when I say that at the Unites...

After all the votes were tallied Nov. 4, incumbent Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota led socialist Democrat Al Franken by 725 votes. The mandatory recount reduced the margin to 215. And then the lawyers took over. They won rule changes in the middle of the game that allowed election officials to add previously disqualified votes to Mr. Franken's total and subtract valid votes from Sen. Coleman's. They unearthed thousands of heretofore missing absentee ballots, all from counties that had gone overwhelmingly for Mr. Franken, and suddenly their boy was up by 312. Then the lawyers got the courts to...

A new Zogby poll shows that a majority of Americans support intelligent design. According to the poll, only 33 percent stated that they believe in Darwinian evolution, while 52 percent stated they believe life was guided by intelligent design. Steve Meyer is the director for science and culture at the Discovery Institute. In his new book Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design, Meyers suggests that the digital revolution is fueling the popularity of intelligent design. "In the book I've written, I discuss the evidence of the digital code that's inside life -- the four-character digital...

The Taliban is buying children as young as 7 to be used as homicide bombers against U.S., Afghan and Pakistani targets, The Washington Times reported. Baitullah Mehsud, Pakistan's top Taliban leader, is paying between $7,000 and $14,000 for each child bomber, according to a Pakistani official who spoke to the newspaper with the contingency he not be named because of the sensitive nature of the topic. The business of child bombers is lucrative in Pakistan where the average per-capita income is about $2,600 a year, the Times reported. "[Mehsud] has turned suicide bombing into a production output, not unlike [the...
