I just saw the vote on C-SPAN. 275 against, 140 for. The Democrats killed it because it contained an amendment, introduced by Representative Virgil Goode (D-VA) that would have repealed the ban on owning handguns in Washington DC.

There is really no way around it; tighter gun controls increase crime. When Britain banned guns, crime went up, including the instances where criminals would enter a home while the occupants were home.
