Kerry's Latest Flip-Flop, Cambodia -- Did He Lie to the U.S. Senate?

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. John Kerry has waffled again, this time on his own recollections of a supposed mission to Cambodia on Christmas of 1968.

On the Senate floor on March 27, 1986 (Congressional Record, page S3594), Sen. Kerry said:

I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what is was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khme Rouge and Cambodians, and have the President of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; The troops were not in Cambodia…I have that memory which is seared--seared--in me....

In an October 14, 1979, letter to the Boston Herald, Sen. Kerry wrote of his vivid memories of his Christmas Eve spent in Cambodia (quoted in Unfit for Command, page 46):

I remember spending Christmas Eve of 1968 five miles across the Cambodian border being shot at by our South Vietnamese allies who were drunk and celebrating Christmas. The absurdity of almost being killed by our own allies in a country in which President Nixon claimed there were no American troops was very real.

But today, on Fox News' "Fox and Friends," Kerry Campaign Advisor Jeh Johnson had this to say to the show's co-host Brian Kilmeade:

JOHNSON: John Kerry has said on the record that he had a mistaken recollection earlier. He talked about a combat situation on Christmas Eve 1968 which at one point he said occurred in Cambodia. He has since corrected the recorded to say it was some place on a river near Cambodia and he is certain that at some point subsequent to that he was in Cambodia. My understanding is that he is not certain about that date.

KILMEADE: I think the term was he had a searing memory of spending Christmas - back in 1986 in the senate floor in Cambodia.

JOHNSON: I believe he has corrected the record to say it was some place near Cambodia he is not certain whether it was in Cambodia but he is certain there was some point subsequent to that that he was in Cambodia.

"DID HE LIE TO THE SENATE?"

Is the Pope is Catholic? Does a bear s... in the woods? Was O.J. guilty? Does the sun rise in the East? Does James Carville look the ass-end of a poodle with his butt shaved?

YES. Yes he lied to the Senate and the American people.

JOHNSON: I believe he has corrected the record to say it was some place near Cambodia he is not certain whether it was in Cambodia but he is certain there was some point subsequent to that that he was in Cambodia.

The problem with Johnson's spin/defense is that it negates the very reason Kerry even talked about the 1968 Christmas in Cambodia incident. It was to discredit Nixon (who wasn't even sworn in yet) that Nixon had secretly sent troops into Cambodia.

If Johnson spins that Kerry was only 'near' Cambodia, then the reason to accuse Nixon and the secret troops evaporates.

This more they spin this story, the deeper the hole they are digging.

Another Kerry spinner later in the day said that Kerry was secretly working with the CIA--who took him along on their incursion into Cambodia---but Kerry can't talk about that. It's still secret, ya know. shhhhhh.

HUH? Let me get this straight. The event was "seared" in his memory.....but he corrected his misstatement....but he is certain that he was in Cambodia.....???

I know, He was IN Cambodia before he corrected his statement and now he is OUT of Cambodia, but he is certain that he was IN Cambodia.... No, that's not working....

I know, He voted against Cambodia before he voted against it...Yeah, that's it...I understand now...

Kerry belongs in a loony-bin!

IMHO, I want to hear it from KERRY HIMSELF, not some dem operative reading off some faxed talking points.Along with his "180", THAT would ALSO "splain" a lot.

Yep!!!
He did!!!
The scrondrel lied again!
He just can't seem to help it.

I think all dems have an innate propensity to lie like, I've never seen before!
This guy has been lying all his life. Sounds like Scott Peterson, Mark Hacking, and all the islamists we've heard about lately.
That propensity is rearing it's ugly head all over this campaign!

Yep! Did it again!!!

So he either was or he was not in Cambodia, and he recalls Presdient Nixon denying that we weren't in Cambodia, except that Nixon wasn't president. This is all seared into his brain. Turns out he was near Cambodia near to the time when Nixon became president.

"If you're half way in the forest how far out are you?"
"If a tree falls and no one is around does it make a sound?"
"Is Kerry's glass half full or half empty?"

Kerry's answers: 1/4, yes and no, yes
