The Earth’s climate has undergone some big changes, from global volcanism to planet-cooling ice ages and dramatic shifts in solar radiation. And yet life, for the last 3.7 billion years, has kept on beating.
Now, a study by MIT researchers in Science Advances confirms that the planet harbors a “stabilizing feedback” mechanism that acts over hundreds of thousands of years to pull the climate back from the brink, keeping global temperatures within a steady, habitable range.
Just how does it accomplish this? A likely mechanism is “silicate weathering” — a geological process by which the slow and steady weathering of silicate rocks involves chemical reactions that ultimately draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and into ocean sediments, trapping the gas in rocks...
“You have a planet whose climate was subjected to so many dramatic external changes. Why did life survive all this time? One argument is that we need some sort of stabilizing mechanism to keep temperatures suitable for life,” Arnscheidt says..
In other words, as the Earth’s temperatures fluctuate over longer stretches, these fluctuations may just happen to be small enough in the geologic sense, to be within a range that a stabilizing feedback, such as silicate weathering, could periodically keep the climate in check, and more to the point, within a habitable zone.

Only billionaire autocrats and their affirmative-action bureaucratic minions are capable of controlling global climate.
Those too, but my frame of reference was the last 100 years or so! Meanwhile, the Left claims "When you realize that volcanism contributes 645 million tons of CO2 per year ...compared to humanity's 29 billion tons per year, it's overwhelmingly clear what's caused the carbon dioxide increase in Earth's atmosphere since 1750." https://www.forbes.com/sites/startswithabang/2017/06/06/how-much-co2-does-a-single-volcano-emit/?sh=62a62e5d5cbf
But MIT publications indicate that it is all in on the “climate emergency” con.
No shyt Sherlock.
He is very famous in the geologic community.
Don’t ya realize what they’re doing? Increased carbon dioxide has been shown to terribly poorly correlate with temperature. Now they’ve made an excuse that deliberately couldn’t work in time to save mankind from rising CO2. Sure, CO2 doesn’t correlate with warm temperatures over the scale of millions of years, but we’re all going to die because the sudden rise is to fast!
Its called 'Clouds'. If Earth gets hotter more clouds are made resulting in the reflection of light back into space. With 73% of the Earth covered with water it works very well.
I believe that we can destroy in a wanton wilful way but when we stop being stupid earth repairs our mess. He also seems to provide our needs. We just read about a huge world class phosphate deposit buried deep beneath our feet in the UK. How many other such undiscovered things lie deep within earth’s crust?
Yeah, no ****. It can and does. The solar output variations drive it all.
Damn right-wing fascist Earth!
Earth is a climate change denier.
If it wasn’t a self correction system we would all have been dead a long time ago. That said, with modern technology it’s now possible for idiots like John Kerry and Bill Gates to mess up the system enough and ‘fast enough’ that mother nature won’t be able to compensate.
Our bigget task at this time is to control hysterical fools with more money than brains.
If there wasn’t a self-correction system we wouldn’t even be here!
Thanks. Too often I post before checking my comments a second time. Glad at least the basic idea came through...
I was pleased to see this article as it’s something I’ve been wondering about recently. The Earth undergoes alternating periods of warming and cooling. Every time it warms, something eventually stops the warming and reverses it. (And similarly with cooling.) So what factor or factors are responsible? And what impact are we as humans having on those factors? Will the current warming continue for longer, or at a faster pace, than ever before, because of us?
MIT has it right-”Divine engineering” means the Divine Engineer knew what He was doing and made it to be durable enough to last for a good long while...
