Biden admin issues restrictions on gas furnaces in latest war on appliances

The Biden administration announced its latest regulatory action targeting home appliances late Friday, this time targeting popular home gas-powered furnaces.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said the energy efficiency regulations would slash household utility costs by $1.5 billion on an annual basis while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the residential sector. The proposal, according to the agency, require non-weatherized gas furnaces and those used in mobile homes to achieve a far higher level of efficiency than cheaper models on the market. […]

DOE’s finalized regulations, which are slated to go into effect in 2028, specifically require furnaces to achieve an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) of 95%, meaning manufacturers would only be allowed to sell furnaces that convert at least 95% of fuel into heat within six years. The current market standard AFUE for a residential furnace is 80%.

Because of the stringent AFUE requirements, the regulations would largely take non-condensing gas furnaces — which are generally less efficient, but cheaper — off the market. But consumers who replace their non-condensing furnace with a condensing furnace after the rule is implemented face hefty installation costs. […]

Overall, AGA (American Gas Association) has estimated the DOE regulations would remove up to 60% of current residential furnaces off the market. …

Turned over to the Administrative State courtesy of George H W Bush and the 1990 Clean Air Act.

I worked for the Bureau Of
Indian Affairs for a few
years. Under the government
thumb for generations,
villagers found innovative
ways to stay warm in winter
months.
The government would build
new homes where an Indian
could establish what the
Whiteman insisted was the
proper way to raise a family,
and this is where the government
has failed miserably.
The Indians would choose a certain
house (with a concrete floor),
knock a hole in the roof, and
build a fire on the floor below
the opening.
There would be as many as fourty
people sleeping on the floor
huddled around that fire.
Wood is scarce in the desert.
One load of wood per house
keeping 40 people warm vs
40 houses competing for the
same resource.
The Biden regime would like
nothing better than for all
of us to adapt to the Indians’
way of thinking.

Their math cannot possibly add up.

Let’s say a household has a monthly gas bill of $100 (for me that would be record breaking). That would be $1200 per year.

How much will it cost the same household to convert to the new furnace, stove, and water heater? $10k?

Even with a 100% increase in efficiency, it would take 20 years to break even.

Whatever is detrimental to America and its people, Biden can be counted on to do it.

Yes,
As listed, the efficiency is going up from 80% to 95 % in the “best” case. That not even 19% increase in efficiency!
Since half of your bill are monthly constant charges, you could safe maybe up to $10 a months!
Yes, man, in less than 100 years, you will be making money!!!

But, wait a minute!
You need to use proper calculations of comparing investments, including the “Time value of money” (taking in account interest on the money).
If you do that you will find that you will NEVER EVER break even.
But you will save the Earth and that what’s counts in Bidenomics!

BTW, most gas heaters are inside the building, so at least part of the “wasted” energy is used to heat your house anyway.

Four years ago I replaced my furnace. Went from 82% to 96% and was looking to saving on my gas bills. First year as expected, saved about 12-14%.

THEN STUPID ASSHOLE BIDEN is selected and price of gas goes up up up. So now, new furnace still uses less gas but the PRICE of that gas is 30% HIGHER. Bottom line, return on investment LESS THAN ZERO. My cost will never be recouped. Just “avoided” HIGHER costs!

SAVINGS? C-mon man give me a break.

Looks like I have to get a back up pot belled stove and a kitchen stove before they are taken off the market.

Corn cobs are great fire fuel saves on wood and coal.
