We’re fast turning into the world leaders in obesity. According to The Health Survey for England 2017, the levels of obesity in England have nearly doubled since 1993 (from 15 per cent to 29 per cent) and 35.6 per cent of adults in England are classified as overweight.
And it gets worse as you age. Between the ages of 45 and 64, this figure rises to 39 per cent.
Obesity rates among British men, meanwhile, are the highest in Western Europe. In 2017, the European Society of Cardiology ranked British men as the most obese in a study of 47 countries.
Obesity in midlife men presents all manner of medical issues: hypertension, high cholesterol, respiratory problems. They are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes at a lower body mass index (BMI) than women and evidence from Cancer Research shows that obesity is the biggest cause of cancer after smoking. In 2017, meanwhile, a study by University College London discovered those with a higher BMI are also more likely to have dementia in later life. The list is endless, and the dangers all too real.
But losing weight when you hit midlife isn’t easy. With testosterone levels waning, it becomes more difficult for men to build muscle, as well as burn calories, which means you’re more susceptible to fat building up around the stomach and chest.

+1 on the water.
I try to drink between 70-90 oz a day.
That’s an amazing testimony there!
Keep going!
I started Nutri System 2 months ago. Down 20 pounds. I walk 2-3 miles a day. I jog at least 1 of those miles.....
Agreed. I only eat once a day in a 4 hour window. Helps that I don’t do anything.
I gained 10 lbs. in the first four months of the lockdown.
I have permanent health issues, and I work diligently to keep the weight off, but the inactivity really hurt.
I redoubled my diet effort the end of September, and increased my weekly exercise by two-thirds.
Down 21 since then, net 11 lb. loss.
I take medication that increases my blood glucose, and struggle staying non-diabetic, and also I’m treated for high blood pressure.
Since losing the weight, my blood glucose is almost completely normal, and the docs are talking about dropping one of my blood pressure medications.
I’ve given up a whole lot in terms of diet. But I love the health improvements. Went for my quarterly check-up with one of my specialists today. In and out in 15 minutes. Just no issues to discuss really.
The effort is worth it.
You’re on your way to happiness.
Soon you will have full happiness.
Tell that to my right knee....
“Cardio is key.”
If you have forever.
But if you want to see real results it comes from weight training and diet.
Cardio is essential for fitness and health, but weight loss comes from building muscle. You build some muscle in your cardio routine, but you have to be anaerobic (HIIT)to get best results.
And building muscle is painful and hard as hell.
And you can’t eat sh!t and expect to build muscle from it.
“And building muscle is painful and hard as hell.”
Not for me.
I was a natural body builder for about 7 years. Weights were easy, the diet is what about killed me.
Once a person builds that ‘base physique’ with weights, it only takes minimal effort to maintain it for the rest of their lives.
I’m 44 and really only need to pump iron 3 times a week minimally to maintain the pump/strength I wish to have.
I have upped my cardio game big time and I have to run about 20 miles per week as the metabolism ain’t what it used to be.
I have a really bad right knee, bone to bone.
I had to shift to a regular bicycle and stationary bike for cardio. I can walk only about 1/2 mile.
In fact a cheap Trek saved my life.
And now it’s gone, but replaced with 3 others, one of which is Italian steel with all Campy gear.
But I miss that old, cheap Trek and wish I had kept it.
You’re still a kid lol
Come back in 20 years and tell us how that “base physique” is doing:)
Oh, and let us know how the metabolism is holding up...
But you’re doing the right thing at 44. Keep it up and do not stop for anything or anybody. If your girl complains about your focus and time, get rid of her. If your buddies want to lure you away from your routine to pound beers, get rid of them too.
Because they do not care about your well being.
Oh, and take 2 weeks off every 6 months.
LOL! I imagine if I keep at it, I’ll maintain a slow-steady decline if I make it another 20 years in this world.
10 sets per body part with weights is what I aim for at least once a week. If I can do it twice a week even better. Work life balance prohibits it sometimes. Hardest part is just getting to the gym.
I did say I needed to massively up the cardio because the metabolism clearly isn’t what it used to be, so reality is hitting me there.
Thankfully, my body doesn’t agree with beer.
Appreciate the posts and dialogue. This is a very important subject I wish more people took seriously.
Strength and endurance don’t decline much if you do the work.
But recovery from injury is a bitch...and it takes away your routine for increasing amounts of time.
I guess until it takes it all. But there’s guys on this forum still lifting in their 70s. Jack La Lane lifted and swam the day he died. Went in his sleep.
Even at 44 you must take days off. At my age I take 2 per week. And if something hurts (not burns), I stop.
Something as simple as tendonitis can take you out for 6-10 weeks.
I only eat meat & drink water. Exactly that & nothing more.
I never snack. When we consume alcohol our body stops burning fat until the alcohol is completely detoxed out of our system. I never want my body to stop burning fat.
Veg & fruit inflame the human digestive tract & are not necessary for proper human health. Seeds & nuts are full of lectins that bind & prevent the absorption of critical nutrients like calcium. No upside to consuming anything but meat.
Interesting. Do you eat a wide variety of meat (fish, poultry, pork, lamb, etc.), or just beef? And do you put spices on your meat...like pepper?
I’ve consumed nothing but lean ground beef & bacon for every meal, every day since December 2018. I only eat what I crave—what truly satisfies me. Every bite of every meal every day tastes like the greatest thing I’ve ever put into my mouth.
My wife is 30 days behind me in this way of eating & she eats a variety of meats. We guess it’s due to the hormonal differences between the sexes.
I only air fry my bacon. I only cook my ground beef in beef tallow, salt & bacon grease. Zero spices added. Just aren’t necessary.
LOL!
I’m 55 and weigh no more than and wear the same size clothes as I did when I was 19. Haven’t weighed myself lately but I’m probably down a few. Always been skinny and need to try and gain. Guess I’ll have to start lifting heavy before I disappear.
Quit bragging. I look at food and I gain weight.
Guess it was a little mean of me to fail to mention that I’m a 5’ 10” guy who weighs 120-125 lbs.
Nothing to brag about at all. Petite to average sized girls/women are instinctively attracted to big/strong men due to survival instincts. Large/obese females are attracted to guys like me.
I should have become wealthy if I wanted a little hottie. Been happily married for just shy of 20 years though. But yeah, she does weigh a little more than me. A lot of it is her butt. LOL I’ve got a black man’s dream girl. True blonde with blue eyes and built like a black girl. She got back.
