I remember a short story called "the silly season" or something like that where only two people left knew the end was near so they took refuge on the highest mountain away from the riotous crowds and watched the final sunset together fondly embracing...

It sounds vaguely reminiscent of "Inconstant Moon" in Analog Science Fiction Magazine some years back.

Story was that the exceptionally bright full moon shining through the high-rise represented the fact that on the other side of the planet, (Earth), the Sun was baking the planet to cinders because of an incredible solar flare.

The viewer of the moon realized that the whole planet had only hours left for human survival.

Agnes is a cat - you can see her picture on my profile. She's lying outside under the van right now, and if she's suffering at all, there's no sign of it. She's at least 18 years old, and may be as old as 20 (she was a secondhand pet.)

"Down there" is not really known. It's the part under the dungeon. The trolls have been paved, and re-paved, so if you go "down there" please, don't go alone, OK?

Sounds like she's suffering from 'feline dementia', common to cats that are over 17.
Dad's cat "Mandee" is 21, and suffers from feline dementia.
