Many FReepers have knowledge to share about improving and maintaining health and would like to share it and learn from others; and others may not know much yet but want to learn. Some of us don't have much money for good insurance or doctors, some want to try other methods besides prescription meds, and some have experience in treating and solving health problems.

More and more "regular" doctors have accepted treatment methods such as the benefits of acupuncture, massage for many conditions, better diet, use of herbs and so on. There are limits, and often side effects, to some standard medical efforts.

My field is Ayurvedic herbalism and related measures, and have a lot of information I can post when I have time. I have seen herbs and sometimes dietary changes help people (including myself) with issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, high BP, gallstones, kidneystones, repeated boils, UTIs, prostate problems, insomnia, allergies, urinary incontinence, and many more. I hope to learn a lot from others with their knowledge and experience.

There are many "old fashioned" home care methods that were in common use a few generations ago that actually work and are cheap, such as castor oil packs, fomentations using alternating hot and cold water, and the like, which are easy to do. I am sure there is a lot of knowledge here on Free Republic that can be shared.

I would like this thread to stay civil without distruption, so my request is that people who think natural health methods are bunkum, make your own thread.

Is it safe to take Arjuna and Hawthorne berry together?

Any reports of side effects or downsides?

Thx!

I take Arjuna and Hawthorne together daily, they work very well together and herbalists do recommend them together. It’s good to add some kind of spice with them to catalyze them (as with any herbs), cardamom and/or cinnamon are very good. Just a pinch or two. I make a small cup, put about 1 3/4 t. of the blend, add hot water and stir. Then I drink when cool, part of it in the morning, the rest later in the day. I think it is what is keeping my heart and BP steady now.

I am just seeing this, I will add you and I do have info about psoriasis; never treated anyone with it, but there are several herbs that work well for all kinds of skin conditions including chronic, difficult ones. In fact I am helping a friend of a friend who has lupus, it’s the kind that causes unslightly and painful/itchy skin inflammation and some swelling in her hands. She’s already feeling better.

I will post info tomorrow. If you can give me any details about what the symptoms are, that would be helpful.

Thank you. I wondered if they’d conflict in any way.

Question for anyone taking magnesium supplement:

Which kind do you use (not brand name but which form of magnesium) and why did you choose this form?

Which form is best absorbed?

Of course it is best to get magnesium from real food, and we do, but the supplement is also medically needed in this personal instance.

Thank you.

Mrs. K.

A few patches on the head and in another area of the body. That is all I know of. Diagnosed by dermatologist last week. Dr. told patient to take zinc, D3, and magnesium and use 2 different shampoos.

The best herbs for dealing with itchy/painful/red/inflammatory skin conditions are turmeric, burdock and gotu kola, and manjista. You can take up to a few teaspoons of turmeric a day, however you can get it down. Golden milk is a good way, I make it with extra turmeric. I read in one herb book written by a practitioner (the only herb books I like), that a woman with life long severe eczema was cured in a couple of weeks with large doses of turmeric.

I wrote these up recently for a woman with lupus presenting with severe skin symptoms. She told me she’s feeling better, and all she got was burdock and turmeric, I’m going to get her some gotu kola. Neem tastes horrible but tablets would be easy to take. I didn’t give her any manjista as she wanted tablets or capsules only and I don’t know where to get manjista tablets or caps. I can probably locate a source if you want to check it out.

Manjista - inflammatory conditions, cools and purifies blood, skin conditions

Burdock - inflammatory skin conditions, rashes, detoxifies and cools the blood

Turmeric - best all around anti-inflammatory, skin disorders, “medicine cabinet in a jar”

Gotu Kola - chronic skin conditions, fortifies immune system

Neem - inflammatory skin diseases, cooling, powerful blood purifier

I can send links of where to get any of these, just ask. Burdock and Gotu Kola are not hard to find. I prefer powdered herbs rather than tablets or capsules, but whatever one can get down. I can give you approx. doses too.

I just saw your reply. Good that it’s not severe or spread over a large area. I would recommend as mild a shampoo as possible with no fragrance. I wash my hair with Kirks Castile soap, I get rashes, red face and very itchy with any shampoo. After the Kirks, I rinse with very diluted white vinegar/water, especially as we have very hard well water.

I looked into magnesium and to me the magnesium citrate seems the best one. Other people know more about supplements than I do; herbs are my niche. I did look up magnesium for leg cramps, and this seemed the best kind of taking as a supplement. Do not over do. I did one night and boy was I sorry. Dosage is 1 t. which I usually took at night. I took a huge heaping t. one night. no no no

I take Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium Glycinate

"Magnesium glycinate vs magnesium citrate

Glycinate Benefits. This form of magnesium is less disruptive on the bowels than magnesium chloride, citrate and sulfate, which can cause diarrhea. Aside from these considerations, magnesium glycinate is five times easier for the body to absorb than magnesium oxide."

Thank you for this information. I will look into learning more about this form. It sounds good.

Pinging the Nat Health ping list (freepmail to get on/off). I’ve been meaning to do this for a long time.

HOW TO DEAL WITH STRESS NATURALLY - ie no psych drugs.

We’ve all been under pressure for a long time - covid, lies about covid, lockdowns and other useless and harmful tyranny, then the poison vaxes. The stolen election. The insanity unleashed by the illegitimate gangster government. Family disruptions due to vax/nonvax, loss of loved ones, health problems. And more. So, how to not get snowed under by all this? Mental stress with attendant depression, anger, anxiety, and all the rest harms the immune system, is no fun, and the medical guys just want to sell mental drugs which basically do no good at all, and can cause harm.

I will post as many things as I can thing of that help calm anxiety, uplift spirits, and otherwise calm the nervous system and the mind. I welcome others to post what helps them, or that they know of.

Regular excercise is very important. Almost anything will do, regular walking is excellent, running not so much (pounds the feet a lot etc). Hatha yoga, stretching, dancing - just put music and and have fun! Gym workouts, whatever one can do. I have a Health Rider and I restarted recently as walking is not so easy for me at present.

Regular prayer or meditation (is there a difference?) is very helpful, silent and recited aloud. Taking time out from the craziness and focusing on the inner life we all have, like finding the eye in the hurricane, can make all the difference. Reading scripture verses aloud I find very helpful, there are many inspiring texts from different traditions.

Deep, regular breathing is important, especially in fresh air if not too cold! Slowing the breath can help calm the mind just by itself.

One thing that can really help is being the witness. we can be a “witness” to what the mind and body are doing. We the person are the soul which is the source of consciousness, and the earthly body is like a vehicle. We can direct the mind away from some thoughts and towards other thoughts. IOW, watch the mind, not identify with it.

I’ll start with music. Sound can be very healing. Everything from marching bands and bagpipes (be still my heart) to Indonesian gamelan, classical music, meditative sounds, Gregorian chants, everyone has their favorites and may want to try some new sounds. Nature sounds, cats purring, all kinds of music...

It would be nice if videos could be embedded on FR but links will have to do. Many of these have beautiful visuals too. Youtubes can be looped so it’s easy to have some calming or uplifting background music on.

Hot bath soak with a couple of drops of lavender oil is really good too. Maybe while drinking the tea.

I hope a lot of people post their methods and ideas. I have a lot, lot more. Now I need to do a lot more of them. Avoiding too much horrible news is vital.
