Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”
Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)
However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.
This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.
Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?
The naivete is stunning.

MEXICO CITY - Gunmen kidnapped 20 men who were traveling together in
Mexico’s Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco, authorities said Saturday.
A shootout between drug gangs, meanwhile, left 14 people dead in remote town
in the northern state of Durango, Mexican newspapers reported.
The group of men in Acapulco was visiting from the western city of Morelia
and looking for a place to stay when they were abducted Thursday, said
Fernando Monreal, director of state investigative police in Guerrero state,
where the resort city is located.
He said the kidnapping was reported by a man who had been with the group.
The man told police that he and another fellow traveler had left the others
to go a store and when they returned their companions were gone.
Witnesses said the men - who ranged in age from 17 to 47 - were kidnapped by
an armed gang that drove them away in the four cars in which the group had
been traveling. Police later found the cars abandoned near the kidnapping
site.
The motive was unknown.

Derry, often referred to as Londonderry, has been rocked in the early morning hours. At approximately 12:05 AM local time a bomb exploded by the Ulster Bank on Culmore Road in Derry, in the DaVinci centre. Early reports indicate that it was in fact a car bomb. A warning, or bomb threat was received by officials approximately an hour prior to the explosion, so area homes were evacuated. So far no major injuries have been reported.
Reports are just coming in, mainly from people around the area on Twitter and Facebook. Derry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland with a population of approximately 107,000. The city of Derry is located near County Donegal in Ireland. The city has a history that is very important to the region, going back to the late 17th century. Early reports indicate that the bomb may have been planted by a terrorist group.

EL CENTRO, Calif. (CN) - Federal prosecutors charged two 21-year-old
men with trying to buy grenade launchers, 40mm grenades and an M-4 rifle and
export them to Mexico. Yoahjan Lara Flores, of Heber, Calif., and Arturo
Lara, of El Centro, were arrested last week and pleaded not guilty.
Lara Flores also was charged with being a felon in possession of a
firearm. He was convicted in 2009 of importing marijuana and was on
supervised release when he was arrested, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Mexico has complained - to little effect - that many of the guns used
in the country mass murders in Ciudad Juarez and elsewhere are imported from
the United States. Some 30,000 people have died in Mexico since 2007 in a
continuing battle for control of the country’s drug market.
Mexican officials, including the president, have complained that the
vast majority of the drugs are not consumed in Mexico, but that the country
serves as a “trampoline” to send the drugs to the United States.
The smuggling of guns from the United States to Mexico has received far
less press coverage than the smuggling of drugs the other way.

The email from Indian Mujahideen (Assam) was received by News Live, a satellite TV channel in Guwahati, and telecast on 7pm news yesterday.
The email signed by Tohik Khan, claiming to be the marketing chief of the so-called outfit, threatened the Assam government with the launching of a biological war if three of their demands were not met within 24 hours.

A recruiting video produced by German militants and posted on an al-Qaeda website has cast fresh light on how European Islamists are joining insurgents fighting in Pakistan’s mountainous tribal areas.
The 51-minute film shows German-speaking gunmen, armed with AK-47s, light machine guns and mortars, apparently taking on Pakistani troops in South Waziristan and Orakzai, areas close to the border with Afghanistan.
They include a clean-shaven man of Caucasian appearance, who wears a baseball hat pulled low on his face and sunglasses.

The new video is filmed in the style of a travelogue – offering a running commentary on the beauty of the region’s forested valleys and scenic waterfalls – but includes a chilling call to arms in German, exhorting young Muslims to join them in their fight against Pakistan and its American ally.
