KIEV, March 30 (Xinhua) -- The Zmiivska thermal power plant (TPP) in Ukraine's eastern Kharkiv region had been destroyed in a Russian missile attack, the Unian news agency said on Saturday, citing Ukrainian power generating company Centrenergo. The missile strike on March 22 destroyed all the plant's units and damaged auxiliary equipment, Centrenergo said in a report. Currently, workers are still clearing the rubble at the site and there is no access to most of the plant's equipment. On March 22, Russia fired 88 missiles and 63 Shahed combat drones at Ukraine, which Ukrainian authorities described as the largest strike...

For non-Chinese journalists, in Africa and elsewhere, working for Chinese state-run media offers generous remuneration and new opportunities. When CCTV launched its Washington headquarters in 2012, no fewer than five former or current BBC correspondents based in Latin America joined the broadcaster. One of them, Daniel Schweimler, who is now at al-Jazeera, said his experience there was fun and relatively trouble-free, though he didn’t think many people actually saw his stories. But foreign journalists working at Xinhua, the state-run news agency, see their stories reaching much larger audiences. Government subsidies cover around 40% of Xinhua’s costs, and it generates income...

China’s Communist Party has a new target in its campaign against pernicious Western cultural influences: April Fools’ Day. “The so-called Western April Fools’ Day does not conform to Chinese cultural traditions or socialist core values,” the party’s leading propaganda organ, Xinhua News Agency, said in a brief message on its official microblog Friday. “Hope people won’t believe in rumors, start rumors or spread rumors,” the message concluded. …

China's state news agency has had to issue a correction after it referred to President Xi Jinping as "China's last leader", an apparent copyediting error. Xinhua later amended the copy, which had by then been widely reused, and asked outlets to change the reference to "China's top leader". In the end many outlets simply removed Sunday's article in its entirety. Such a mishap is extremely rare as references to China's president are believed to be closely scrutinised. Chinese media is heavily regulated, with government censors often removing content on websites and social media. The two phrases are just one character...

After news of the story spread in Korean yesterday, the original article was found to...

China tightened its control over the distribution of news by foreign agencies Sunday, further restricting international access to the already tightly regulated Chinese media market. The new measures took effect immediately upon being issued by the state Xinhua News Agency. The regulations give Xinhua broad authority over foreign news agencies, requiring them to distribute stories, photos and other services solely through Xinhua or entities authorized by Xinhua. The rules would affect The Associated Press, Reuters and other foreign news agencies seeking wider access to the rapidly expanding Chinese market. It was unclear how other news organizations would be affected. Under...
