Kate Smith first performed “God Bless America” the day before Veteran’s Day in 1938. She was a patriotic American, who wanted to encourage fellow citizens as they suffered through a terrible depression and saw a world being torn apart by Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. She wanted to reach Americans with the faith she felt for the future of the nation. As a leading performer in a radio market reaching nearly every household in the country, her way would be through song. So, Kate asked Irving Berlin to write a song that would cause citizens to embrace a positive perception of...

A veteran who collapsed in an Albuquerque Veterans Affairs hospital cafeteria, 500 yards from the emergency room, died after waiting 30 minutes for an ambulance, officials confirmed Thursday. Officials at the hospital said it took a half an hour for the ambulance to be dispatched and take the man from one building to the other, which is about a five minute walk. VA spokeswoman Sonja Brown said Kirtland Air Force Medical Group personnel performed CPR until the ambulance arrived. She says staff followed policy in calling 911 when the man collapsed on Monday. "Our policy is under expedited review," Brown...

Vets feel neglected as Congress recesses10/29/2002 5:28:10 PMJennifer Steiskal Congress took off a couple of weeks from Washington to finish campaigning and the American Legion scolds them for neglecting veterans. Legislation that veterans say would give military retirees their dues was put on hold until after the election. Right now, disabled veterans receive disability compensation after they retire, but they don't get retired pay. Local veterans say that's not the case for any other federal worker, and instead of a recess, Congress should have stayed and changed the law. “They're gong to use it for the last couple days...

War veterans 'injured' once again When President Bush signed the defense bill earlier this month (a package that totaled $355.5 billion), an item that was omitted, due to threats of veto, was a piece of legislation about "concurrent receipt."House-originated, concurrent receipt legislation affects approximately 88,000 veterans who are retired from the military after 20 or more years of service and have service-connected disabilities of 60 percent or more. These veterans who suffered wounds, chemical poisons such as Agent Orange, and various other disabilities adjudged by the Veterans Administration to be caused or aggravated during their military service have been...
