Six months after the start of scheduled air service, Pan Am made its official departure from Tunica County. The last flight took off from the Tunica Airport on Oct. 8. Since May, Pan Am had operated three flights a week from Atlanta to Tunica. County administrator Clifton Johnson attributes the exodus to internal problems within the Pan Am organization. The Grand Casino's Veranda Hotel was evacuated on Friday morning after three sticks of dynamite were found in a hotel room. Workers were changing furniture when they discovered what looked like dynamite under a bed. Police say there was no cap, fuse, or detonator. The hotel was evacuated and bomb-sniffing dogs searched the entire facility, but nothing else was found. The Tunica County Sheriff's Department turned the dynamite over to the Memphis Police Department Bomb Squad.

MARION, Ark. (AP) - A bus carrying Chicago-area tourists to a Mississippi casino crashed and overturned early Saturday, killing at least 14 people, state police said. The bus crashed on Interstate 55 in northeastern Arkansas, near Memphis, Tenn. Authorities believe it was headed to Tunica, Miss., a popular destination for casino gambling, when the accident happened about 5 a.m., state police spokesman Bill Sadler said.
