Seems there have been quite a few casino junket bus accidents.

1. Church groups.
2. Casino buses.

For some reason, these two groups account for most “bus plunges”.

Anybody in New Jersey can attest to #2.

Interestingly....Thursday evening...I observed an NHP pull over one of those junket buses from San Jose on a side street in downtown Reno. I was sitting outside eating at a restaurant. No people were inside. As the driver stepped out of the bus...he was miffed. The NHP officer approached the driver and said he had cause to do an inspection. NHP made the driver check the brake lights...one was out. He then started looking in every nook and cranny of that bus...and kept writing things down. The inspection took about 20 minutes. Then the NHP went back to his truck and came back with a long sheet....I assume containing violations. The bus driver was in shock as he was told that he better find another way back to San Jose! NHP told the driver that until the violations were taken care of he better not see that bus on the road!

After reading about these crashes....I am glad to see the NHP taking proactive steps!!! ;)

That bus in Texas just about emptied out my church today. Several of the largest families have relatives in that parish. The homily was very similar to a funeral homily. I don’t know yet if there is anyone I knew among the dead. A couple of the names are familiar. Some of the people in Houston went there from here and some of the people here were in Houston before they moved here.

While that may be true in some circumstances, I work for a personal injury atty. and I can’t tell you how many people would be screwed by the ins. co. if they didn’t have an atty.

It's been a really bad run for buses. However, the overall fatality rate is still lower than US air carriers, even adjusting for extraordinary circumstances in 2001:

http://www.bts.gov/publications/national_transportation_statistics/2002/html/table_02_01.html

Those are absolute numbers. I wasn't able to find anything that converted them to rates like passenger miles or passenger hours.

I do, too, and I agree. Not smart to deal with insurance conpanies on your own.

Several months ago there was some minimal news coverage about this bus company because it is the same one that runs trips from the U.S. to Mexico. As I remember, there was strong suspicion that this company was owned by or tied to Mexico, had no insurance, never did inspections, one driver stopped had no license and could not speak English. They keep giving the same company different names but their structure and method of operation is the same. They need to pull them all off the road. If there is a drop of insurance ot any assets available to help any of the people who were injured, or those who died and left children without parents it would surprise me. People need to wake up and realize that they should not use any of these buses for anything.
