The President of the United States will meet directly with New Hampshire voters to discuss health care reform on Tuesday -- before three of New Hampshire's four members of Congress do. Rep. So where did that crowd intent on heckling Congressmen Jim McGovern and Richard Neal during their UMass town hall style meeting on healthcare come from? It appears that the crowd was made up of many of the same supporters of the Worcester Tea Party movement, at least according to morning callers to WTAG. Additionally, calls for attendees went out before the meeting on freerepublic.com, where one posting from a “Ken” stated, “We know that Mr. McGovern will not answer these questions directly. We will confront him when he does not answer though. After a question goes unanswered, we’ll chant “ANSWER...

Direct democracy can be a headache for town officials who have to cut and re-cut before voters bless a municipal budget. Budget referendums are uncommon in most of the United States and aren't universal in Connecticut, taking place mostly in smaller towns. Last month, Bethel, Brookfield and Newtown each had two failed referendums, when voters decided the budgets just spent too much money. Some officials feel their towns are victims of a cycle of frustration stemming from rising prices everywhere else. "The negative side is that we are probably the only thing people can vote on and have an impact,"...

Speaking from the balcony of a theater at Central Piedmont Community College, the 61-year-old commercial real estate broker had laced into Bush for his conduct of the war on terror, his environmental record and his opposition to legalized abortion. "In my lifetime, I have never felt more ashamed of my leadership in Washington," Taylor told the president. "And I would hope from...

Maine Civil Liberties Union prompts council's change MONSON - It has long been a tradition in March for residents in this small Piscataquis County town to bow their heads in prayer before they act on the town's budget for the year. That tradition is no longer. Monson selectmen voted last week to discontinue the practice of including prayer in municipal meetings. The move was prompted by a request from the Maine Civil Liberties Union for the town to cease including sectarian prayer in its public meetings. The MCLU said it had received complaints from Monson residents who felt discouraged from...
