The Texas attorney general says television companies have become unwelcome visitors in consumers' homes. Ken Paxton announced five separate lawsuits, including two against Chinese companies, alleging that the television companies are secretly spying on Texans by recording what they watch at home. The Texas AG said in a press release that the method through which the companies were conducting their spying is called Automated Content Recognition technology. Labeling it an "uninvited" and "invisible" digital invader, Paxton said that the software is capable of capturing screenshots of a user's TV display every 500 milliseconds. Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense, and TCL each...

Arkansas PBS on Thursday severed ties with the PBS network, a move that will take shows like “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” and “Antiques Roadshow” off the air for tens of thousands of viewers. The decision makes Arkansas PBS the first statewide public TV system to break from PBS since Congress voted this summer to strip $500 million in annual funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which backs TV and radio stations across the United States. The loss of federal funding has put enormous pressure on the public media system, sending stations scrambling for ways to fill big budget gaps. The...

The trouble with nostalgia is that it appears to rewire our minds, bringing only pleasant memories to the forefront of our consciousness. It is incredibly effective at erasing the things we don’t want to think about. We remember bubblegum and video games more than malaria or third-world starvation. Our salad days are filtered through rose-tinted glasses; we assume everything was better in the past. I was thinking about this recently after reading that MTV would be shutting down at the end of this year. As someone born in the final minutes of the 1970s, I am a member of Generation...

December 9, 1965, marked a quiet revolution in American holiday television — the day A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired on CBS. Based on the beloved Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz, the half-hour animated special introduced to millions a different kind of Christmas story: small in scale, emotionally honest, tender, and subversively thoughtful. At the time, few expected much. The special was produced on a modest budget, completed in just six months, and featured child actors rather than seasoned voice talents — a bold choice for 1965 television. Executives worried: no laugh track, understated pacing, a jazz soundtrack by Vince...

In 1985, the iconic Lucille Ball stunned both Hollywood and audiences across America when, after doing three successful comedy series, she took on a serious, dramatic roll playing a homeless woman surviving the streets of New York City. It was a project Lucille Ball wanted to do, and one that she did well, so well, that former homeless people who actually lived on the streets praised the film for its accurate portrayal.

Does anyone here use Sling? We 'cut the cord' many years ago, and have used Roku since then; but I would like to have one or two channels that are only available to cable subscribers. (We don't want or need cable.) I'm just wondering if anyone here has been happy with Sling, and what one needs to make it work. I'm not interested in movies, just cable news, documentaries, history, Thanks very much.
