"You are privileged to be an American" I just heard these words from an unexpected source. I had called for technical support regarding my wireless router. I had to wait for a computer function to run, and while I waited the young man I was speaking with asked where I was from. From my "accent" he had guessed that I was an American, and I confirmed to him that I was. That is when I heard those words, and they are so true. He said that some people would be willing to kill to get here if necessary. He spoke...

I live in an area where DSL is not yet available, and have been here three years and still stuck on dial-up. I do not know when DSL will ever be available and have been considering satellite access through HughesNet. What I wanted to know is does anyone out there have HughesNet, and if they do are they happy with it and would recommend it. I would also like to know the pros and cons if possible and any personal opinions. Thanks.

"The similarities are almost eerie. This year, readers gave us the lowdown on over 13,000 desktop PCs—enough data to rate eight of the country's leading brands. And the final tally looks an awful lot like last year's survey results," Cade Metz reports for PC Magazine on "The 19th Annual Reader Satisfaction Survey." Metz reports, "This year, you diehard PC Mag readers detailed your experiences with nearly 20,000 PCs (notebooks and desktops) and more than 6,500 printers (from mono lasers to color ink jet all-in-ones). And what you say about the leading manufacturers isn't always what we'd expect. No big...

I need help. Windows XP SP2 on my computer will not start. Earlier this morning, everything was going great, then Firefox locked up while doing a Google search. Locked up tight, and I had to press and hold the power button for several seconds to shut down. Now, when I power up, everything goes well through POST until Windows tries to start up, then the screen goes black and all disk activity ceases. After waiting several minutes with nothing happening, pressing the power button for a fraction of a second shuts the computer down. I've tried booting to Last Known...

I've tried various flavors of Linux (on live cd) on both desktop and on 3 laptop computers, to wit: Ubuntu 6.06Knoppix 5.01Damn Small Linux 3.0 (Knoppix hack) Overclockix 3.79 (Knoppix hack) By and large none of these Linux versions have any trouble finding the cable modem router & internet when run on desktop PCs. But none of them seem to be able to find the internet on the 3 laptop PCs running either Linksys PCMCIA 802.11g wireless network cards or Broadcomm internal 802.11 b/g wireless network card. Linux can't seem to find the Broadcomm internal 802.11 b/g wireless network card...

I belong to a Vets Association that for many years has published a newsletter. I would like to scan these newsletters and be able to search the text along with burn them to CD. Can anyone give me advice on a program for scanning that will result in the ability to search? AND do I need special equipment such as a special scanner) to be able to do it. My operating system is XP Pro SP2 (2002). Thank you for any assistance.

I have both Sonic and Nero for the CD burning. On QuickBooks specifically, it saves in a CD Burning file, when I look at the path it is going to it says C:\Documents and Settings\(my name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning....but I can not find "Local Settings or anything beyond that when looking at Windows Explorer. I tried to copy music also and it was not accessible, incorrect function. I can drag things into Nero or Sonic, but then even when I tried doing that with music, it does not play when I put the disk back into the computer or in...

VANITY: computer assistance :( my addled brain | 05/05/06 | Spacetrucker Posted on 05/05/2006 1:56:46 PM PDT by Spacetrucker I am having a difficult time figuring out a problem with my laptop (HP pavilion zv 5000). It powers up fine on AC power, but will not run on battery power at all. The control panel says the battery is in good working order, at 100% charge, and I have run the troubleshooter on it several times to no avail. I am hoping that this may be some kind of program thing that has the battery switched off (before you ask...

Today a new ping list is starting on FreeRepublic, called TechSupport it will be a place for Freepers to get some help on problems that ight arise on their computers. Why a list for this: Some of the freepers who run or are involved in technical ping list find themselves with a good deal of mail from people asing about problems that many freepers might be able to and have more time to help with. I have spoken to a few people who either run list or are involved on them and they fell this would accomplish three things. Firstly...

Today is one of the worst days for Technical Support people in the computer industry. People around the globe, unwrapping their new computers, iPods, cell phones, and other technological marvels will be popping in the batteries or plugging in various connectors only to find out they have absolutely no idea what they're doing. It gives me chills down my spine. There's no telethon for chills down the spine, is there? I'd be the poster child, standing up on stage with... um... Christopher Lloyd or...um... Rob Schneider. Yeah, any time a movie of his is out, I've got Spine Chill Syndrome....

I just upgraded my Norton. I had Norton antispam working quite well a while back and then it disappeard. No more spam bar on the outlook. I just had to upgrade my subscription and I assumed that the spam bar would come back but no dice. I installed some ms updates aabout the same time the spam bar disappeared. How do I get my norton antispam to work fully. Yes, I know this isnt breaking news. But it is midnight and I didnt want to go into the hole of darkness without an answer.
