My sister and her husband have got themselves in a terrible jam. When they had to transfer back to the USA from an overseas government job they took money out of his thrift account to use as a down payment on a home. They knew there would be penalties and taxes due but they thought it was all taken out in advance. It wasn't, and now they found out they owe $40,000. I'm trying to see if anyone can come up with suggestions on how they should deal with this. Does anyone know the current interest rate with penalties figured...

No one has been less forgiving than Glenn Beck when it comes to Democrats with tax problems. Not just the well-known ones like Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner but also less serious ones such as Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, whose husband only recently paid off $6,400 in tax liens on his auto repair business, and Nancy Killefer, who withdrew her nomination to be White House chief performance officer, citing a $946.69 tax lien on her Washington home. Their tax issues are just one indicator of “a culture of corruption among some of the left,” Beck declared just last month in a...

"Associated Press writer Stephen Ohlemacher had a news story yesterday about President Barack H. Obama’s latest nominee with tax problems, Lael Brainard. We think he left out two pretty important details. First, Ohlemacher’s report says Brainard “is the fifth presidential nominee to reveal tax issues during the congressional vetting process.” The key to the partial truth in that sentence is “during the congressional” vetting process. While Ohlemacher likely is factually correct, the sentence certainly is misleading. One reads it and thinks, “Oh, that’s the 5th appointment he made with tax issues.” That is not true. In fact, it doesn’t count...

You would think that by now the very first thing President Obama would do before he nominated someone for office is to have someone check their tax returns. After all, so far his appointees have produced four tax embarrassments: * Tim Geithner, who was picked to be Treasury Secretary (and new boss of the IRS) "forgot" to pay $34,000 in taxes. * Former Senator and "non lobbyist-lobbyist" Tom Daschle was designated to run the Department of Health and Human Services got a private car and driver and didn't know he was supposed to pay $100,000 dollars in taxes on it...

President Obama is getting a lot of credit for admitting he “screwed up” the nomination of Tom Daschle to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. Here’s what Obama told CBS News: I made a judgment that he was the best person possible for the job. I was very eager to make sure that we can deliver on a commitment that I have to deliver healthcare for the American people. I think I messed up. I screwed up in not recognizing the perception that even though this is an honest mistake, I believe, on Tom’s part, that, you know, ordinary...
