We are Robyn and Michelle Lytle–a Chicago-based couple on a mission. Michelle came up with the idea for The TaTa Top in response to a story Robyn told her about an incident at a Chicago beach. Robyn had been hosting two Dutch women as a cultural exchange, and they were not familiar with the topless laws in the U.S. When they went to visit one of Chicago’s beaches, they didn’t think twice about running into the lake topless for a quick swim on a hot summer day. Chaos ensued, and a male lifeguard told them they had to leave unless...

SANAND, India (AP) — Tata Motors inaugurated a factory Wednesday to produce its super-cheap compact Nano car, nearly two years after violent farmer protests forced the company to relocate. The new factory in India's business-friendly Gujarat state promises to unleash production of the pint-sized car, which Tata plans to export to Europe, and eventually the U.S. Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata and Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi together drove the first car — a sunshine yellow Nano — off the assembly line shortly before 1p.m. "We owe you a great debt of gratitude for having made this happen," Tata said...

But her bosses and two women on a conference call from the company's headquarters in Atlanta changed their tune when it came to her uniform evaluation “They were like, your shorts and your shirt size could use some improvement,” said Smith. Cassie, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 132 pounds claims she sat there while...

When it was launched less than a year ago, the $2,500 Tata Nano was promoted as a safe, ultra-cheap car for poor Indians, an alternative to the motorbikes that zoom precariously around the country. New questions about the safety of the pint-sized auto are being raised, however, after one of them burst into flames Sunday as it was being driven home from the showroom. Software engineer Satish Sawant, his wife and 5-year-old son escaped from the silver Tata Nano — which still bore a celebratory garland of marigolds on the front hood — before the tiny car was engulfed by...

The world’s cheapest car is about to get greener and sportier. A hybrid version of the tiny Tata Nano has been confirmed by Ratan Tata, chairman of Tata Motors, according to South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper. The current gasoline-powered Nano — on sale in India since April — is hardly a gas guzzler. Powered by a tiny, 35-horsepower 2-cylinder gas engine, the Nano is capable of approximately 50 miles per gallon. A greener variant of this engine (or the larger 3-cylinder motor planned for export markets) could make the Nano the world’s cheapest hybrid.

India has made a big splash over the last few days with the announcement by Tata Motors of its new mini-car, the Tata. Even though the car's release was originally scheduled for last year, everyone is still very excited. Finally, an affordable ($2,000 US) car for the masses! (A $60 down payment is all it takes, I have heard.) There are a number of implications of this situation, and reactions from different sides. Let's take a look at a few of them. First, there is the collective *gasp* from the "peak oil" crowd, followed by hysterical Oh Noes. One Australian...

Around noon on January 10, the massive Tata Motors pavilion at the Pragati Maidan would be the place to be, if you are a chronicler of history or an industry specialist or just a plain automotive enthusiast. At that time Ratan Tata will take the covers off the Tata people's car which has been dominating mindspace both inside and outside the industry for its sheer concept and execution since the better part of a decade. The obvious need to provide a more stable, safe and protective set of basic transportation at an affordable price point to the Indian masses who...
