Two of the more right-wing Likud ministers, Public Security Minister Uzi Landau and Environment Minister Tzachi HaNegbi, say they may not be able to be ministers in the upcoming government. Landau said today that he would forego a ministerial post if it comes with having to support a Palestinian state, as Prime Minister Ariel Sharon appears to be demanding. Sharon, meeting with his fellow Likud ministers yesterday, asked them to support his positions, including no opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state. When HaNegbi replied that he does not intend to represent a line that "stands in 180-degree opposition...

OSLO (Reuters) - Donor nations promised Afghanistan $1.24 billion Wednesday to help rebuild the war-wrecked country in 2003 with projects ranging from roads to educating girls barred from schools by the ousted Taliban regime. "We feel that the international community is committed to us," Afghan Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai told a news conference after the meeting, when asked if Iraq might overshadow Afghanistan....

Wide majorities of Americans believe Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein will become more dangerous if the United States does not take military action to disarm him, according to a newly released survey. The poll, conducted by Scott Rasmussen, found that 63 percent of adults believe military action is needed sooner rather than later to ensure that Saddam does not become more powerful. Nearly three-quarters, or 74 percent, said they believe Iraq already has nuclear and biological weapons, compared to just 8 percent who say Baghdad does not have such weapons of mass destruction. If the U.S. does learn with certainty that...

WASHINGTON (AP)--President Bush gained important new Democratic support for his Iraq war resolution Wednesday, bolstering his expected margin of victory in Congress for broad authority to use force against Iraq. The White House cited a new CIA assessment as further justification for strengthening the president's hand as both the Republican-led House and the Democratic-ruled Senate forged ahead with debate on the resolution. House passage was expected Thursday. Senate action might come later because Democrats remain divided. But leaders of both parties were predicting passage by wide margins by week's end. In the first vote on the resolution, the Senate turned...

A man sues six bars and liquor stores and the electricity company because of injuries he sustained when, while drunk, he climbed over a fence with a locked gate and scaled an electrical tower. And then there is Mississippi.</p>

After meeting President George Bush in the Oval Office, Igor Ivanov, Russia's Foreign Minister, said merely that the two sides would pursue their exchange of views on how to make the work of...

Originally published in the Los Angeles Times, September 13, 2002.In Washington's forlorn search for allies in its war against Saddam Hussein, the support of one nation - the people of Israel - has been taken for granted and scarcely noted. Yet as the world debates the wisdom of a U.S. attack on Iraq, Israel's voice needs to be heard. No nation, after all, is likely to suffer the consequences of the war more than the Jewish state. Israeli intelligence takes for granted that a cornered Hussein will seek revenge on America's ally and unleash his nonconventional arsenal on Israeli cities....
