These stunning images reveal the remains of a century old sunken ship that has been preserved beneath freezing Lake Superior. The ship looks almost exactly the same as the day it sunk beneath waves in 1911.At 60 metres long and built in Leith, Scotland in 1897, ‘The Gunilda’ sunk after it struck some rocks and could not be saved. Now, these stunning images have been captured 107 years after the sinking when a small group of divers revisited the vessel. Becky Kagan Schott and her team dove an incredible 270 feet deep to reach the Gunilda and photograph her remains....

A large, heavy ship, scuttled between 1775 and 1798, is being dug out of its damp grave at the site of a new hotel construction project in Old Town Alexandria. Archaeologists found the partial hull of a ship at 220 S. Union Street, part of the city's major redevelopment of the Potomac River waterfront. It's on the same one-block site where workers two months ago discovered a 1755 foundation from a warehouse that is believed to have been the city's first public building.

Underwater excavations led by Ankara UniversityÂ’s Research Center for Maritime Archaeology (ANKÃœSAM) have uncovered sunken ships ranging from the second century B.C. to the Ottoman period in Ä°zmirÂ’s Urla district. A recent excavation uncovered a ship estimated to date back 4,000 years, which experts say would make it the oldest sunken ship to have been discovered in the Mediterranean. Urla Port is one of TurkeyÂ’s rare underwater excavation sites. Professor Hayat Erkanal, the head of Limantepe excavations for the underwater ancient city of Klozemenai and director of ANKÃœSAM, said the port dates back to the seventh century B.C. Klozemenai, he...

Ship with 700 tons of gold ore disappears off Russia MOSCOW – A vessel with a nine-person crew and 700 tons of gold ore onboard has disappeared in stormy seas off Russia's Pacific Coast. The ship sent a distress call on Sunday as it was sailing from the coastal town of Neran to Feklistov Island in the Sea of Okhotsk. The vessel, hired by mining company Polymetal, was carrying 700 tons of gold ore from one deposit to another where it was to be processed. Gold ore is the material from which gold is extracted and contains only a small...

Workers excavating at the World Trade Center site have unearthed the 32-foot-long hull of a ship likely buried in the 18th century. Archeologists say the vessel probably was used along with other debris to fill in land to extend lower Manhattan into the Hudson River. Archeologists Molly McDonald and A. Michael Pappalardo were at the site of the Sept. 11 attacks on Tuesday morning when workers uncovered the artifacts. They call the find significant but say more study is needed to determine the age of the ship. The two archeologists work for AKRF, a firm hired to document artifacts discovered...

Li: Leave mystery ship salvage to China, Japan The Asahi Shimbun KAGOSHIMA-China's No. 2 leader issued what appeared to be a veiled warning to Washington to keep out of the salvage of a mysterious ship sunk last December after a firefight with the Japan Coast Guard. Speaking Tuesday to The Asahi Shimbun during his visit to Japan, Li Peng said, ``Intervention by parties not directly concerned in the issue will only make the problem more difficult and complicated and will not add to a resolution of the issue.'' The chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress was...
