<p>In the race for Rep. Marge Roukema's 5th district House seat, Republican E. Scott Garrett leads Democrat Anne Ricks Sumers by a 48%-33% margin, according to a poll conducted by Public Opinion Strategies for the National Republican Congressional Committee.</p> <p>The Sumers campaign disputes the NRCC numbers and released their own internal poll from last week, which shows the race in a statistical dead heat, Garrett 42%, Sumers 40%. The Democratic poll shows Sumers leading Garrett by eight points in the Bergen County portion of the district, and losing by 21 points in the other three counties.</p>

<p>It wasn’t supposed to turn out this way.</p> <p>As a devout believer in the wisdom of conventional wisdom, I thought Scott Garrett’s victory in the 5th District GOP primary over Dave Russo and Gerry Cardinale all but guaranteed Democrat Anne Sumers a November victory.</p>

If the theme of Anne Sumers' campaign could be summed up in a few words, they might be: "I'm just like Marge." Marge, of course, is the woman Sumers is trying to succeed in Congress: retiring Rep. Marge S. Roukema, who has represented the 5th District for 22 years. Roukema is a Republican, and Sumers is a Democrat, but Sumers says that in this case, voters need to look beyond party labels.
