Both are pizza-like in their ingredients and flavor, but they’re not the same. What's the Difference Between a Stromboli and a Calzone? The term “baked goods” can evoke imagery of cookies, cakes, and muffins, but baked goods don’t always have to be sweet. Take savory turnovers, for example. They’re typically made from a base of dough or puff pastry, but instead of fruit and sugar, they’re filled with various meats, cheeses, vegetables, and sometimes sauces. Oftentimes, the result is something that closely resembles pizza (or a pizza pocket)—especially if we’re talking about the stromboli and calzone. At a glance, both dishes...

This Sentinel-2 image has been processed in true color, using the shortwave infrared channel to highlight the new flow of lava. The northernmost island of the Aeolian archipelago, located just off the northern tip of Sicily, Stromboli’s volcano has been erupting almost continuously for the past 90 years. Credit: Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data (2022), processed by ESA, CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO Early on Sunday morning, a volcano on the Italian island of Stromboli erupted, releasing huge plumes of smoke and a lava flow pouring into the sea. Less than five hours after the eruption, the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured...

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a “high intensity” explosion Monday at the Stromboli volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, located off the southern coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. The institute’s surveillance cameras captured the event in visual and thermal format early Monday. The explosion could be seen sending ash and steam at least 100 meters into the air and streams of lava rapidly running down the center-south side of the volcano. The institute reported the event lasted four minutes. "From the seismological standpoint," it "was characterized by a sequence of explosive...

Firefighters were deployed to extinguish fires started by the eruption, and a helicopter was dispatched to rescue hikers who signaled distress, according to the Italian fire and rescue service, Vigili del Fuoco. Fire service spokesman Luca Cari said fire brigade teams recovered the body of one hiker. The two primary eruptions occurred around 4:46 p.m., local time, on the island, which is located in Tyrrhenian Sea, off the western coast of Italy, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported. Those eruptions were preceded by lava spills about two minutes prior. Cristiano Demurtas, who was working with an ecological theater...

It's a terrifying vision: A violent eruption of Italy's Mount Etna triggers a massive collapse of one flank of the volcano, sending 35 cubic kilometers of debris--the equivalent of 10,000 Cheops pyramids--hurtling at 400 kilometers an hour into the Ionian Sea. The Big Splash unleashes a 50-meter-tall wall of water that, within a few hours, wipes out coastal settlements across the Mediterranean. This catastrophe happened 8000 years ago--and a Mediterranean monster of similar magnitude could happen again. That's the scenario invoked in an analysis in last week's Geophysical Research Letters. "It was an extraordinary event, probably the largest tsunami unleashed...

Like rising bubbles in champagne, gases from Earth's interior can ascend to the surface and cause magma to explode in dangerous splatters. A new study, detailed in the July 13 issue of the journal Science, shows that these volcanic "gas slugs" originate from deeper inside the planet than previously thought. The work, by Mike Burton and colleagues at the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Italy, could help scientists understand why some volcanoes erupt more violently than others... Called "Strombolian" activity -- after the Stromboli volcano in Italy where it has been best studied -- these small volcanic blasts...

Volcanic Italian island on alert Emergency plans have been put into operation after two new craters opened on the summit of the volcanic Italian island of Stromboli. One of the new lava streams created on the island, just north of Sicily, has already started flowing into the sea. Coastguard patrol boats have been deployed and the population of 750 people has been urged to stay away from the danger areas. The last major eruption in 2002 caused a collapse that led to a small tsunami. The wave reached 10 metres (33ft) high and caused serious damage to Stromboli village on...

I'm being slightly lazy again, but with good reason. It's not often that you see footage of a tsunami being generated. Though the quality isn't great, the movies on this page are impressive. My IE5 was able to run these AVI format movies with Windows Media Player. Click on the images to get the movies. http://www.ct.ingv.it/Stromboli2002/GeoVulca/Tsunami.htm

Update: The tsunami phenomenon, which yesterday we defined "small" in order to avoid useless alarms when news were still very confusing and contradictory, has revealed hour after hour all its severity. The greatest damages were recorded in Ginostra, but also in the village of Stromboli many boats were destroyed or taken away by the waves, and many buildings were damaged. At least 3 tourists are reported injured, and other sources talk of 6 injured in total. The tsunami has reached also the other Eolian islands and Milazzo harbour, where 2 tankers suffered difficulties. During the evening, following the invitation of...
