Countless artists and bands have come and gone over the years, each leaving their own mark on the landscape of American rock. In such an oversaturated scene, striking upon something truly original can often be difficult, but it was never one that particularly troubled jazz fusion legends Steely Dan. From their initial formation in 1971, the band—spearheaded by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker—operated on an entirely different level from their contemporaries in New York, pioneering a truly original new sound. Admittedly, Steely Dan’s fusion of jazz, rock, and pop proved somewhat controversial, alienating both jazz fans and rock fans in...

Michael McDonald has detailed his failed attempt to “make some easy money” by selling cocaine. It was the ‘70s and McDonald was a member of Steely Dan’s touring band, while also providing backing vocals on their albums. The rockers’ common interests extended beyond music, as they were also frequent cocaine users at the time. In a moment of inspiration – or stupidity, depending on how you view it – the musicians devised a plan to sell drugs on the side. McDonald details the scheme in his new memoir, What a Fool Believes. He and Walter Becker decided they would “buy...

Produced by longtime collaborator Gary Katz, the album went on to be the band’s most successful, and their first platinum disc. The recordings of Steely Dan are so superbly crafted that it’s no surprise they have won honors for their studio engineering as well as their superior musicianship. The band’s magnificent Aja album, released on September 23, 1977, went on to win a Grammy Award the following February 23. It was for Best Engineered Recording, Non Classical, for Al Schmitt, Bill Schnee, Elliot Scheiner, and Roger Nichols. This masterwork, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, came...

Aja by Steely Dan is one of my favourite albums ever. Sure, it might not generally be considered the greatest of all time - but it is perfect in a way that no other album is. Steely Dan made records like no other band. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker would write the songs, and then to record them they'd bring in some of the world's greatest session players. Couple this with beautiful arrangements and outstanding recordings and the result is an album that allows us to hear incredible musicianship. The perfection on this album is intentional. It's not a gift...

Steely Dan’s long lost song "The Second Arrangement" has surfaced online. The track, recorded in December 1979 while the band was laying down material for their 1980 album Gaucho, has long held a kind of mythological place among Steely Dan fans. As the story goes, the group recorded the majority of the song, with only a few simple additions needed to bring it to completion. After heading home for the night, they returned to the studio the next morning, only to discover that the "The Second Arrangement" tapes had been accidentally erased. The band tried to recreate what they’d recorded,...

It was a jazz nerd’s dream come true: legendary Miles Davis and Weather Report saxophonist Wayne Shorter was coming into the studio to record on a song. Even better, it was a song that you wrote. Most rock musicians probably wouldn’t have known Shorter from a hole in the wall in 1977, but Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were no average rock musicians, and Steely Dan were no average rock band. Raised as jazz snobs on the east coast of the United States, Becker and Fagen had worked hard to push Steely Dan beyond their initial 1970s soft rock sound....

“I still believe that love is all you need,” Paul McCartney continues to proclaim, “I don’t know a better message than that.” And yet John Lennon took that love-uber-alles ethos to such an extreme in the 1970s that even his old rose-tinted mate was retorting, “Too many people preaching practices.” So it’s no surprise that the sardonic duo in Steely Dan rolled their eyes when they heard the ‘Smart One’s’ prayer for peace with ‘Imagine’ and a string of pious talk show appearances in the early 1970s. Steely Dan’s bold response to Lennon’s all-white evangelism signified that the prominent days...

Former Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones is currently promoting Pistol, the new FX series following the story of his former punk band. However, in two recent interviews, the guitarist has revealed that he doesn’t listen to his old music much these days. He would much sooner find himself listening to Steely Dan than any 1970s punk rock. The topic first came up in an interview with The Telegraph last week. “I never really listen to the Pistols’ music anymore,” Jones admitted. “I’m xxxx tired of it, to be honest with you. I’d rather listen to Steely Dan.” It will come...

It's inevitable that, sooner or later, some pivotal moment in your life – a cultural or political event that changed what you did or thought – will become history. In that moment you realize not just that (a lot of) time has passed, but that your memory of that moment is wholly subjective, and open to interpretation – or misinterpretation. In my young life, that moment was punk rock, and I was naïve enough to believe for years that it was a wholly subcultural event, and hardly likely one day to become a six-part miniseries streamed by Disney. (If I...

Like many of the biggest groups of the early 1970s, Steely Dan grew up under the shadow of The Beatles. When Donald Fagen and Walter Becker came together in 1971, the pioneering group had already been broken up for more than a year. They may have wondered if they had somehow absorbed the ghost of ‘The Fab Four’ and that it was their responsibility to carry the flame in their absence. Indeed, Fagen and Becker intentionally modelled themselves off The Beatles, choosing to emphasise writing and recording than relentless touring. However, Steely Dan could also be highly critical of The...
