Donald Fagen hated this song. Felt the music company forced the song on them to be “commercial”. I believe they never played this song live after its initial release.

Never heard that. Purity against commercial concerns doesn’t go very far in music.
Nat “King” Cole said “I had the opportunity early in my career to stay with my jazz trio music that appealed to afficionados in small clubs or take the chance to make big commercial hits at Capitol. Had to take the chance.”

Steely Dan is one of my favorite bands, but none of my friends liked them so I listened to them when I was alone. Them and Chicago were my gateway bands into jazz. Josie and Black Cow are my favorites.

This came out before that Interwebs thing and I was always puzzled how Fagen, who ordinarily sounded so much like Jerry Lewis, suddenly could sound so ... ‘normal.’
Come to find out, the vocalist is Weird Al look-alike, David Palmer.

Reputed to be one of the best break out albums ever, steely dan surely made a mark with this album. I must agree, it is a great album. The track you cite is poor. Only a fool would say that is the best song on the album. The singles off the album were meant for top 40 radio.

My understanding is it took Fagen a long time before he would play the song live. I am not sure why. Fagen and Becker were the ones who brought in David Palmer to sing the song. I’ve heard this story a few times in recent years on various classic rock stations (SiriusXM channels).

Turn That Heartbeat Over Again, is my favorite song on the album, a great way to close the record.

"that insipid “Ricky Don’t Lose That Number”.
It's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number". If you had a real appreciation of their music you would have at least mentioned the guitar solo, and not botched the spelling of it's title! That song has been around for about 49 years now and you can't even get the spellings of the title and main character right?...Come on, man!

You should check out Oscar Moore - Nat Cole Trio’s guitarist.

All these years later, I found out only recently that Only a Fool Would Say That was Fagan/Becker mocking John Lennon's commie manifesto Imagine.
