State governments are working to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in the US, as federal officials say more testing for the illness will likely see the number of known cases increase. There were at least 470 cases and 19 deaths in the United States across 32 states and the District of Columbia as of Sunday morning. That national figure includes 380 people diagnosed through the US public health system and 70 people repatriated to the US -- 46 from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, 21 on the Grand Princess cruise ship and three from China. Here are the...

  • This One Map Shows The Largest Employer In Every State

Broadview Networks The above map, sent to us by Mike Simmons of Broadview Networks, shows the largest employer in every state. Broadview Networks used information from CareerOneStop, a database sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor. Interestingly, only two companies in the top 10 largest employers in America — IBM and Wal-Mart — appear as a state front-runner. And the map doesn't feature other large companies, like UPS and McDonald's, at all.Instead, major state universities, like those in Alabama and Colorado, and innovative hospitals, like the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, employ the most residents in numerous states. In some states, like Alabama, when...

Last year, just under 15% of the U.S. population did not have health insurance coverage. But as the different stages of the Affordable Care Act roll out over the next few years — and more Americans become insured — this rate is likely to fall. For now though, health insurance remains out of reach for many Americans. In states like Florida and Alaska, more than one in five residents are without insurance. And an estimated 22.5% of Texans didn’t have health insurance last year. Based on data recently released by the U.S. Census Bureau, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 10...

President Barack Obama famously promised, “If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan.” He later got even more specific.“If you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have,” Obama said. But as Obamacare’s rollout approaches, we have learned this is not true. Here are the ten states where consumers may like their health care plans, but they won’t be able to...

A map of estimated illegal immigrant population, state by state. ~snip~ Estimating where exactly illegal immigrants reside in the United States is tricky, but the Pew Hispanic Center did just that in 2011 for each state. Although California has the highest number of illegal immigrants, Nevada has the largest proportion of illegal immigrants—7.2 percent of the state population and as much as 10 percent of its workforce. California and Texas follow at just under 7 percent of their populations, with New Jersey and Arizona rounding out the top five. ~snip~
  • Please stop abusing the state lists!

There is an epidemic of abuse of the "state" lists. These lists are for topics that specifically pertain to those states. Too many posters post to all 50 states for topics that are of national interest not specific to any state. This renders the state lists nearly useless. My state currently has 7 of the recent 10 articles that having nothing in particular to do with my state. The whole point of the state lists is to prevent readers from having to sort through all articles to spot those that are locally pertinent. Just because you think an article is...
