A substantial number of patients with brain metastases who experience cognitive side effects following radiation therapy may fully regain cognitive function, according to a pooled analysis of three large, Phase III clinical trials. Recovery was more likely for people treated with conformal, or highly targeted, radiation techniques, compared to standard whole-brain treatment. The two most common types of conformal radiation are stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), which delivers fewer, but higher doses of radiation per treatment to the tumor site, and hippocampal avoidance WBRT, which limits radiation exposure to the parts of the brain known to contribute to neurocognitive side effects that...

Cancer that spreads to the brain from another part of the body such as lung or breast is called a metastatic brain tumor. In some patients, surgery and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) can help alleviate these symptoms in patients who have a limited number of tumors. Despite what its name implies, SRS isn't actually a surgery but instead involves highly focused radiation that targets tumors while minimizing the effects on surrounding healthy tissue. The treatment is often used after a patient undergoes surgery to remove brain tumors in a process called postoperative SRS. However, SRS can also be given before surgery,...

Flathead, Lincoln counties could lose millions if Secure Rural Schools is not reauthorized. Congress recently passed a $1 trillion spending bill to keep the United States government in operation, but missing from that bill are the funds that many counties in Montana have come to rely on in their annual budgets. The budget bill dropped $330 million in funding from Secure Rural Schools, a federal program run through the U.S. Forest Service providing funding for counties and schools. Last year, Flathead County received just over $1.6 million in SRS funding; roughly $1,067,000 went toward the county’s road department, and the...

The Serbian Radical Party has become the biggest force in Serbian politics following the country's general election. It is unlikely it will be able to form a coalition to govern the country, but already there are fears that the destructive nationalism witnessed in Serbia during the wars of the 1990s is returning. The BBC's Matthew Price spoke to the party's vice-president, Tomislav Nikolic, to find out if this fear is justified. Do you think the tag ultra-nationalist is a fair one for your party? We are a Serbian national party. Most of us are Orthodox Serbs, but we also include...

Court: Floridians who have sex changes can't marry as new gender TAMPA, Fla. - Transgender people cannot marry as their new sex under Florida law, a state appeals court ruled Friday in setting aside a divorce ruling between a man - who once was a woman - and his wife. It was not known how many marriages the ruling affects since people are not required to prove their sex when seeking a...

<p>An outgoing deputy prime minister, Nebojsa Covic, said voters had punished the reformist government for failing to raise living standards.</p>
<p>"Living standards." There’s always an excuse for hatred, it seems: "We supported Hitler because the economy was bad," or "We didn’t oppose Stalin because he kept order." The behavior of many Serbians over the last decade sickens me. Remember the TV images of Serbian youth holding rock concerts in support of their soldiers’ genocidal activities in Kosovo? Just to set the record straight, I’ll once again remind people of the blood that some (not all) Serbians have on their hands.</p>

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 — Two federal agencies announced today that they had opened investigations into JetBlue Airways in response to the airline's admission that it had provided travel records on more than a million passengers to a Pentagon contractor, violating its own privacy rules. The moves by the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Trade Commission came as JetBlue disclosed that it had hired Deloitte & Touche, the accounting firm, to review the company's privacy policies and determine if they needed to be revamped. The fast-growing three-year-old airline, which is based in New York and has worked to...
