Monster Energy is reportedly getting the sponsorship rights to NASCAR’s No. 1 series at a per-year rate far less than what Sprint paid. According to a report from Sports Business Daily, Monster’s agreement to sponsor NASCAR’s Cup Series is a two-year agreement with an option for two more years. The energy drink company is reportedly paying $20 million per season, though NASCAR CEO Brian France said the numbers reported weren’t “accurate.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR on Wednesday announced that it has added a wild-card element to setting the Chase for the Sprint Cup field and it has simplified its points system for 2011, making it easier for fans, competitors and the industry to understand. While the 12-driver Chase field remains intact, the final two spots will be determined by the number of victories during the first 26 races. The top 10 in points following Race No. 26 -- the "cutoff" race -- continue to earn Chase berths. Positions 11 and 12 are "wild-card" qualifiers and will go to non-top-10-ranked drivers...

The most advanced piece of technology in a Nascar vehicle these days isn't its engine, its suspension or anything made of carbon fiber. It's the motor oil. Joe Gibbs Racing, a team that owns three top-level Sprint Cup cars, has spent about $1 million a year over the past decade to perfect its motor oil. As a result, its engines have squeezed out an extra 10 horsepower, a roughly 2% increase that can be a serious advantage in Nascar races, where the typical margin of victory is about one second. With Nascar increasingly cracking down on the use of technology...

FORT WORTH, Texas -- NASCAR is trading the Christmas lights of New York for the neon of Las Vegas. The Sprint Cup postseason awards banquet, a fixture in Manhattan since in 1981, will be moved to Las Vegas for this season, sources have confirmed to NASCAR.COM. Although the venue is yet to be determined, the change has already been approved by NASCAR and is awaiting only final approval from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, a taxpayer-funded entity that has championed the move west.

DARLINGTON, S.C. -- The future of NASCAR's oldest major speedway sits on Chris Browning's desk, in the form of a thick, ring-bound booklet packed with timelines, blueprints, architects' renderings, and maps. The president of Darlington Raceway reaches into his five-year master plan and pulls out a graphic of a two-story, barn-styled garage complex, complete with a fan observation area, that may one day grace the infield of this revered 57-year-old track.
