Monday on CNN’s “OutFront,” former Gov. John Kasich (R-OH), who is set to speak in support of Joe Biden for president at the Democratic National Convention, said Evangelicals’ support for Trump was not “consistent with the things that they believe in as promoted in the Old and New Testament.” Kasich pointed to Democratic presidential nominee former Vice President Joe Biden’s faith as a determining factor in his support. Kasich said, “I would encourage other Republicans to know that it is okay to take off a partisan hat, take off your partisan hat and vote on the basis of what your...

I give my thoughts on why Larry Sharpe, the Libertarian Party candidate for governor of New York, is worthy of your vote, even if it's purely symbolic.

For those of you wondering why I’m writing another column about the alt-right, the reason is simple: Every time I do, people comment to explain why I’m wrong. Those people, some of whom I used to know, are starting to buy what the alt-right is peddling. Some of them are brazen enough to inform me that I, as an active social conservative, should be “smart enough” to realize that “the Jews,” whom they somehow believe to be a homogenous and monolithic group, are responsible for all of the evils Western civilization faces. One of these people even wrote that Richard...

Donald Trump has maintained and even increased his favorability numbers among white Protestant Republican voters in the past few weeks, a recent Gallup poll shows. The numbers stand in stark contrast to the latest ABC News-Washington Post poll showing his loss of support in the past few weeks among several other key voting blocs, including Hispanics and African-Americans. The Gallup poll found that Trump’s favorability among “highly religious” white Protestant Republicans increased to 66 percent this month from 57 percent in the window between February and the end of May. The 9-point gain is reflective of attitudes among evangelical Republicans,...

Reclusive billionaire David Koch, a powerful donor in American conservative politics, says he’s a “social liberal.” “I’m basically a libertarian, and I’m a conservative on economic matters, and I’m a social liberal,” Koch told ABC News’ Barbara Walters.... Koch, who supports abortion rights and gay marriage, said he isn’t concerned with candidates he supports who don’t share some of his views. He said his primary concern when choosing a candidate to support is their fiscal policies.

In Washington, D.C., the city's department of health wants to subject people seeking a tattoo or body piercing to a mandatory 24-hour waiting period before they can go through with it. That's just one of the regulations in a 66-page proposal of new rules for the tattoo and piercing industry. Reasonable people may differ on the wisdom of these proposals, but as someone whose interest in such establishments begins and ends with keeping my daughter away from them, I can't get too worked up either way, save to say D.C. has bigger problems to worry about. What did catch my...

Former U.S. Rep. Bill Zeliff is joining Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign. A source in the campaign told UnionLeader.com that the former Jackson innkeeper “will help with federal and New Hampshire issues as an adviser and will help raise money in Washington, D.C.” Zeliff, a Republican, was first elected to New Hampshire’s 1st District U.S. House seat in 1990. He left the House after three terms and ran unsuccessfully for the GOP nomination for governor in 1996. Zeliff has been a Washington lobbyist for the past 10 years, currently employed by The Livingston Group, headed by former Republican Rep. Bob Livingston...

Well, that time has come for me. I’m leaving FR. However, I do not consider this an “opus”, as I am NOT going to use it to rehash old slights or arguments, or to give my personal opinion of what “should be done around here”. As has been so often pointed out, this is Jim Robinson’s site, and he runs it as he sees fit. Rather, all I’m going to do here is give a general reason for my departure, and say a hearty-but-sad “GOODBYE!” to all the folks here who have enriched my life in the past four years....

May 4, 2004 California's Accidental Governor ere's one recipe for political success: Wealth, independently acquired. Enormous selfconfidence. A brand of Republicanism coupling liberal social views with fiscal pragmatism. This mix has worked well for Michael Bloomberg, who, despite low popularity ratings, has turned out to be a productive and innovative New York City mayor. And it seems to be working even better for Arnold Schwarzenegger, California's governor. Six months into the job, the last action hero can seemingly do no wrong.Of the two story lines, Mr. Schwarzenegger's is the more improbable. Though people questioned Mr. Bloomberg's political...

Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay calls his party's $373 billion spending bill "worthy of the national challenges it meets." Republican House Appropriations Committee Chairman Bill Young says it's "the best product we could provide.” Democratic Rep. David Obey says it's not only "a bad bill" but "a gratuitous insult to every worker entitled to overtime pay." The president of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, Tom Schatz says not only are the Republicans three months behind in presenting the bill, they've apparently spent the time to "pile on the pork." DeLay says the bill is an "achievement in...

Cal Thomas Says Arnold Is No Ronald Reagan He may be an actor, but that's about the only thing Arnold Schwarzenegger has in common with Ronald Reagan, says conservative columnist and TV broadcaster Cal Thomas. "Ronald Reagan was an actor who became governor of California, so why not Arnold Schwarzenegger?" Thomas asked. "Or so the argument goes. Why not actor Gary Coleman, then, or any of the other candidates for whom inexperience, not to mention cluelessness about what's needed to repair the damage done to the state's economy, seems to be their main qualification?" According to Thomas, nobody knows what...

<p>It was not the topic of a sermon, but it was still a hot topic on many minds at Bethel Baptist Church in Santa Ana on Sunday. Vote with your heart or your head?</p>
<p>"As believers, we should all be concerned about social issues," said the Rev. Dan Davidson, Bethel Baptist's pastor for 15 years. "Over the years, we've voted for the lesser of two evils. But I can't vote for someone who's socially liberal, even if he's fiscally conservative."</p>

On its own, Christie Whitman's departure from the national political stage is a minor event. Her tenure at the Environmental Protection Agency will soon be forgotten, and her once limitless future is now decidedly in the past. What is momentous is how quickly Whitman went from rising star to Washington burnout. The story of how it happened is bad news for socially progressive Republicans everywhere. Talk about potential: Whitman burst onto the political radar in 1990 when, in challenging Sen. Bill Bradley from New Jersey, she nearly pulled off an upset. She was elected governor three years later and quickly...
