The rift within the Democratic Party was on full display at the California Democratic Party Convention on May 19 in Sacramento, California. Progressives joined members of National Nurses United, protesting the Democratic Party establishment’s refusal to support single payer healthcare system. Rather than follow through with Democratic rhetoric that healthcare is a human right, establishment Democrats have responded to voters by scolding and attacking them.

IBM seems to have made a bit of a faux pas with a campaign that was supposed to encourage more women to work in science and technology. But women in the industry are pretty insulted with the computer giant's online campaign asking women to use a hairdyer of all things to experiment with. They tweeted a video (which has since been deleted) explaining that less than three in ten science and engineering jobs are held by women. So the idea was probably in good faith, but in future they may want to get a second opinion on how best to...

SAN LUIS, Colo.—A creepy string of calf mutilations in southern Colorado has a rancher and sheriff's officials mystified. Four calves were found dead in a pasture just north of the New Mexico state line in recent weeks. The dead calves had their skins peeled back and organs cleared from the rib cage. One calf had its tongue removed. But rancher Manuel Sanchez has found no signs of human attackers, such as footprints or ATV tracks. And there are no signs of an animal attack by a coyote or mountain lion. Usually predators leave pools of blood or drag marks from...

New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) has long been rumored as desperately seeking the democratic nomination for president in 2008. And while many political observers fully expect the power hungry former First Lady to hit the campaign trail within only a few months of being re-elected as a US Senator in 2006, US News & World report claims to have a confirmation of sorts. From USNews.Com's Washington Whispers: Hillary's in… You don't have to take it from us about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton 's desire to run for president. Her brothers, Hugh and Tony Rodham, say it's true. Friends...

I enjoy this forum, but lately I've noticed a troubling tendency for posters here to descend into horrible and immature name-calling. Such name-calling, and extremism without reason does nothing but harm our cause. It turns off casual lurkers and readers of this forum. It provides fodder for this forum to be demonized and non-respected elsewhere. Below I provide a few examples. I call on Freepers to stop using such terms voluntarily. If that doesn't work, I call on the moderators to warn, if not censor, posters who use such terms. I realize that Democratic Underground uses even more ridiculous terms...

BOOKS OF THE TIMES | 'BILL CLINTON'Portrait of a President, Warts and . . . More WartsBy MICHIKO KAKUTANI pasted-together compendium of recycled news, familiar observations and base gossip, Nigel Hamilton's new biography of Bill Clinton represents a sleazy new low in the chronicling of presidential lives. It regurgitates the most scurrilous and unsubstantiated rumors about Mr. Clinton and his wife; dwells, with voyeuristic fascination, on his sex life and uses soap opera prose and sociological hot air to recount (in this, the first of two projected volumes) Mr. Clinton's life through the conclusion of his tumultuous 1992 run for...

You've seen them on television, you've read about them in magazines, you've heard from them on the radio -- and now Al and Tipper Gore spill their guts (or, at the very least, flog their books) in The Reliable Source. Last week in New York -- sandwiched on their schedule between Katie Couric and David Letterman -- we finally redeemed our long-promised lunch with the ex-veep and his wife. They're in the midst of a media juggernaut to tout two joint publishing ventures: "Joined at the Heart," an anecdotal book on the modern American family, and "The Spirit of Family,"...

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- President Bush defended in a snappish tone Tuesday his own business experience with a corporation accused of fishy accounting. ``Everything I do is fully disclosed; it's been fully vetted,'' the president said as he paused to speak with reporters during a church appearance in Wisconsin. ``Any other questions?'' Bush was responding to a journalist who asked for his reaction to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, who said in Tuesday's newspaper that Bush's recent campaign against corporate malfeasance draws on ``firsthand experience of the subject.'' Bush, in 1989, was on the board of directors and audit committee...
