ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Hundreds of small earthquakes have been reported near a volcano in southeast Alaska believed to have been dormant for at least 800 years. The cause of the quakes under Mount Edgecumbe, a volcano near Sitka that resembles Mount Fuji in Japan, are not known. However, they may not be an indication of volcanic activity, said Dave Schneider, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage. Mount Edgecumbe is a 3,200-foot (976-meter) stratovolcano located on Kruzof Island, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) west of Sitka. The volcano is part of...

Among the latest targets in the mob movement to remove historical monuments throughout America that has gained steam since the tragic death of George Floyd is the statue of Alexander Baranov, the first Russian governor of Alaska, that sits outside the Sitka City Hall. Nearly 100 people rallied in front of City Hall on June 23, calling for the statue to be removed, and the Sitka Assembly voted 6-1 last Tuesday to move the statue from its prominent spot in the town. Baranov was the first chief manager of the Russian-American Company and directed the expansion of Russian authority in...

SITKA, Alaska (AP) - Authorities arrested a fugitive convicted on drug and theft charges after finding him hiding this week in what they called an "elaborate tunnel system" dug underneath a trailer home in Alaska. The tunnels narrowed as officers walked further in, forcing them to trudge through on their knees and then on their stomachs. Police in the city of Sitka say they eventually spotted Jeremy Beebe's foot sticking out of another hidden entrance, catching him after an officer pulled back the skirting around the trailer.

Paco, a 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix, was killed and eaten by a brown bear as Sitka resident Paula Myers watched in horror just a few feet away on Monday. Paula Myers never imagined that her first bear encounter would occur just a few feet from her Sitka home, and that her dog, 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix Paco, would be killed and consumed by a brown bear right in front of her eyes. Myers and her husband, Brad Langdorf, moved to Sitka in January to work at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium. Coming to Alaska was a new adventure for the couple, Myers...

SITKA, Alaska -- An Air Station Kodiak HH-65 Dolphin helicopter transiting to from Canada to Sitka overheard an Emergency Locating Transmitter (ELT) as they were nearing Sitka. Shortly after hearing the signal and attempting to use their direction finding equipment to locate the source, a radio call came in from a small plane on the beach at Shoals Point. The owner of the plane was radioing to the 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa, which was patrolling Sitka Sound, to see if he could get some assistance to move his plane up the beach away from the tideline. The two persons...
