When tragedy strikes, we often ask how or why. This occurred recently in Texas; unfortunately, it is something that happens too frequently in every state. In a span of only six weeks, four current and former Harris County Deputy Sheriffs died. But their deaths were not in the line of duty – it was suicide. For several weeks, these tragic losses swept the national news and brought into specific relief a problem of which many remain unaware: those that protect us need our help. This happens across the country, with California, Florida, New York, and Texas suffering the highest rates...

A sheriff in Georgia is praising the actions of an armed homeowner who stopped a would-be intruder from gaining access to a child's bedroom, while also issuing a warning to other criminals in the county. Butts County Sheriff Gary Long says a man named Abdul Aquil is in custody in connection with the break-in, and is lucky to be alive after his encounter with the armed citizen. Aquil allegedly first tried to gain entry to the home through a bedroom window with a child on the other side, but the child's father heard the commotion and interrupted the burglar as...

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — All 67 county sheriffs in Florida have now entered into agreements with federal authorities that will lead to “street-level” immigration enforcement, Gov. Ron DeSantis said. DeSantis’s announcement Wednesday evening at the Homestead Air Force Base in Miami-Dade County comes days after the Florida Sheriff’s Association said every county jail in the state has entered into agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that will give local officers some immigration authority. Under the 287(g) program, ICE operates three different models that give local law enforcement the ability to act in some capacity as immigration officers: the Jail Enforcement...

Imagine local sheriffs who actually comply with federal immigration law. What a concept. Perhaps The New Yorker magazine is more comfortable with local police officials who defy such laws because their jurisdiction is in sanctuary cities. However, when faced with the reality that many sheriffs around the nation are more than willing to comply with federal law in order to protect their citizens, the New Yorker finds this problematic as you can see in their Thursday story by Jessica Pishko, "How Sheriffs Might Power Trump’s Deportation Machine."Pishko finds it highly problematic that local sheriffs are willing to cooperate with the...

If President-elect Donald Trump ramps up deportations as promised, he will have a strong ally in Chuck Jenkins, the longtime Republican sheriff of Maryland’s Frederick County. “I’m willing to support the president 100%,” said Jenkins, 68, gravel-voiced with a gray buzzcut. “I want to do more, within the law.” That prospect is spreading fear in immigrant circles, advocates say, and drawing mixed views from residents in this growing county, which backed Democrats in the last two presidential elections. But Jenkins, once dubbed among the nation’s 10 toughest immigration sheriffs by Fox News, sees Trump’s imminent return to the White House...

Against the background hum of the convention center, Dar Leaf settled into a club chair to explain the sacred mission of America’s sheriffs, his bright blue eyes and warm smile belying the intensity of the cause. “The sheriff is supposed to be protecting the public from evil,” the chief law enforcement officer for Barry County, Michigan, said during a break in the National Sheriffs’ Association 2023 conference in June. “When your government is evil or out of line, that’s what the sheriff is there for, protecting them from that.”

*** “The sheriff is supposed to be protecting the public from evil,” the chief law enforcement officer for Barry County, Michigan, said during a break in the National Sheriffs’ Association 2023 conference in June. “When your government is evil or out of line, that’s what the sheriff is there for, protecting them from that.” Leaf is on the advisory board of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, founded in 2011 by former Arizona sheriff Richard Mack. The group, known as CSPOA, teaches that elected sheriffs must “protect their citizens from the overreach of an out-of-control federal government” by refusing...

Sheriffs in southern Illinois say they are bracing for more crime and more victims that result from the end of cash bail across the state. "Folks who live here are extremely concerned," Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon told Fox News. "It's an experiment on the backs of victims of crime. I have serious concerns and so do the people that live here." On Tuesday, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled in favor of eliminating the state's cash bail system. The ruling takes effect Sept. 18, making Illinois the first state to fully abolish cash bail.

Several sheriffs in Oregon said they will not enforce the state’s new gun law that places a limit on magazine capacity, arguing that the provision violates the Constitution’s Second Amendment.Oregon voters approved Measure 114, also known as the Reduction of Gun Violence Act, during the Nov. 8 midterm elections. The adjective in the title of this essay begs a question. What is it that distinguishes a constitutional sheriff from a sheriff? The short answer is that a constitutional sheriff understands his oath of office and demonstrates its relevance. The oath is front and center in his policing and policy decisions. His oath is a source of courage and restraint day-to-day. Article VI of the Constitution for The United States of America requires all legislators, executive and judicial officers of the federal government and several states take an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution for the United States of...

Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz slammed House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s “Commitment to America” agenda in an exclusive interview with the Daily Caller on Friday, focusing specifically on one bullet point that suggests the GOP should subsidize the hiring of 200,000 new police officers through recruitment bonuses. ... “So if you see, like, the third bullet point in whatever this is suggests that the federal government needs to fund incentives for 200,000 new law enforcement. I do not believe in the federal government being excessively entangled in state and local law enforcement. It is not practical,” Gaetz told the Caller....

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has so far randomly audited 24 sheriff’s offices in Missouri in search of concealed carry weapon (CCW) details, but they all refused to comply, according to law enforcement authorities. “None released anything pertaining to CCWs themselves, but some did partially comply by answering procedural questions on issuing CCWs,” said Moniteau County’s Sheriff Tony Wheatley. “They answered two of those standard questions but nothing, as far as I know, was given from any sheriff pertaining to any CCW files.” As previously reported in The Epoch Times, the FBI informed several Missouri County sheriffs that they...
