On his final night in office, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger reduced the prison sentence of the son of former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, Esteban Nuñez, who had pleaded guilty to participating in the killing of a college student. The governor also granted several other commutations and pardons and gave plum government appointments to political allies and the spouse of his chief of staff. Schwarzenegger announced the moves in a batch of eleventh-hour press releases e-mailed to reporters. Esteban Nuñez, now 21, was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in the stabbing death of Luis Santos. Schwarzenegger cut the...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday called for eliminating California's welfare-to-work program, one of the deep cuts he proposed to close a $19 billion budget deficit in the coming fiscal year. Slashing the welfare program would affect 1.4 million people, two-thirds of them children. In releasing his revised budget plan, the Republican governor laid out the most severe cuts to health and welfare programs since the state tumbled into recession nearly three years ago. He said cuts to government services over the past few years have done away with the "low-hanging fruit." "We now have to use the...

There is absolutely no way I’ll be able to make this relevant to tech. But I’m posting it anyway. Our Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, vetoed a California legislative finance bill – AB 1176. The letter is terse and to the point. And the first letter of each line in paragraphs 2-3 are even terser and more to the point. Schwarzeneggers battles with the state legislature are epic. But this just goes way beyond epic. It’s something for the history books. (click the link to view the message...)

Sacramento, CA -- Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger helped a student who fainted at a speech in Sacramento. Watch the boy on the left side of the screen. You can see him waver a bit, and then pass out. The Governor immediately went over the help. The boy and the Governor got a chance to talk later in the nurse's office. The student told the Governor he blames global warming for the incident.

Dateline 20 September 2006 In less than two months time America will elect the last Congress of George W Bush’s Presidency, and more than half the states – including New York – will elect a governor. New York is one of the states with an open gubernatorial election, so even if the result was in doubt we could still be sure the state was getting a new governor. In mid-term elections I like to list the gubernatorial candidates I believe most deserve to win and those who most deserve to lose. Four years ago the results – when compared with...

I guess that you could call this a vanity but it affects everyone in California and beyond! It is CRITICAL that we make our voices heard on this issue! The situation is this: Bill SB 1437, was passed and sent to the governor. It requires all textbooks to be rewritten and reissued at a cost that our school system, not to mention taxpayers, can little afford. They will indoctrinate schoolchildren with a homosexual agenda. The bill requires that all new textbooks (k-12) highlight homosexuals and eliminate all references to mom and dad. The governor is doing a phone poll. Please...

Facing a certain veto, state lawmakers have abandoned their effort to require that textbooks in California schools detail the history and achievements of gays and lesbians in America. State Sen. Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica), the author of SB 1437, said she made the change even though it removed 90% of the import of the measure, which would have been the first in the country to mandate the teaching of homosexuals' contributions. But Schwarzenegger's office, which had taken the rare step of announcing his intention to veto the bill, provided no encouraging signal that he would change his mind. "The governor...

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a solid lead over either Democratic challenger in a head-to-head battle in the November election, at least among those who have a preference, but 30 percent of likely voters remain undecided, according to a nonpartisan poll released today. The survey, by the Public Policy Institute of California, is wide ranging but a theme emerges: The news is good, or at least better, for the governor on virtually all fronts - and it's clear his two Democratic challengers have a lot of work to do. One-on-one, Schwarzenegger holds an 8 percentage point advantage...

After KFI made an initial announcement earlier today that Gov. Schwarzeneggar was going to announce today at 3pm whether he has made a decision (he was not going to tell the decision), KFI has backtracked. On its 3pm news broadcast, KFI reported that a Schwarzeneggar spokesperson has put out the word to the news media that they should call tomorrow after 3pm to see if he had made a decision. There was no confirmation that the governor would have a decision or that, if he had a decision, he would announce it. The drama continues. This is so unfair to...

Dear Governor: November 9, 2005 06:19 AM EST There is no such thing as a fusion candidate, no such thing as a bipartisan campaign or a non-partisan issue, and come election night, there are just two parties, one at the GOP HQ and one at the Dem HQ. There's a winners' party and a losers' party. Last night you were speaking to the losers' party. I didn't go. Why bother? The polls had shown for a few days that only Prop 75 had a chance (the measure to stop public employee unions from deducting political dues from their members' paychecks...

Sir Paul McCartney has urged California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to ban the French delicacy foie gras. The former Beatle appealed to Mr Schwarzenegger in a letter to make California the first state to ban the pate made from geese and duck livers. Other stars, including Martin Sheen, Kim Basinger and Chrissie Hynde, also urged him to approve a bill to outlaw the sale and production of foie gras Foie Gras is made by force-feeding the birds to expand their livers. Sir Paul was asked to write the letter by animal rights group Viva!-USA. He said: "As you probably know, the...

Fury in Dem-Land: Bloggers Want Kerry to Hit Back By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Morning Editor September 02, 2004 (CNSNews.com) - Democrats on Thursday described Republicans as the "angry party," but rank-and-file Democrats were the ones venting their fury on Republicans -- via a Democrat-sponsored blog, calling "Kicking A**." Many of the people posting comments on the "daily dispatches" website said it's time for Kerry to fight back. What's he waiting for, they asked. "Last night, the Republican Party proved once and for all that it has nothing to offer the American people," says the Democratic National Committee's Kicking A** website....

Arnie, mayor still at odds over gay marriage By Adriel Hampton Staff Writerahampton@examiner.com Published on Monday, February 23, 2004 Printer-friendly version | E-mail this story Even as the wedding frenzy subsided for a weekend, the political war of words over San Francisco's same-sex nuptials escalated, with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mayor Gavin Newsom dueling on separate Sunday talk shows."Maybe the next thing is another city that hands out licenses for assault weapons. And someone else hands out licenses for selling drugs," Schwarzenegger said on NBC's "Meet the Press." Later on CNN's "Late Edition," Newsom blasted back."It's not about AK-47s," he...

<p>Washington -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger turned up the rhetoric against San Francisco's move to allow same-sex marriages, saying on national TV Sunday that he fears outbreaks of serious civil unrest if the ceremonies continue at City Hall.</p>
<p>Schwarzenegger said on NBC's "Meet the Press'' that he fears worsening protests about the divisive issue and worries the situation could get out of hand if courts don't quickly stop the marriages, which are being performed in defiance of existing state law.</p>

<p>State Attorney General Bill Lockyer on Saturday rebuffed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's demand that he force an end to San Francisco's same-sex marriages, calling the directive political rhetoric.</p>
<p>"The governor can direct the Highway Patrol. He can direct the next 'Terminator 4' movie if he chooses. But he can't direct the attorney general in the way he's attempted to do," Lockyer said, adding that Schwarzenegger's written directive "was a statement designed for consumption at the Republican convention."</p>

Seven weeks. What if that was all the time you had to sell a new product online? And you had to have the site up today. And there were already competing sites. Potential buyers would make immediate and perhaps lasting decisions about your product based on what you launched. That's the challenge faced by, for lack of a better term, campaign CIOs working for candidates running for governor in California, the world's fifth-biggest economy. Most of the 130-odd gubernatorial hopefuls in the unprecedented recall campaign won't make this demand of anyone. They're kooks. A few non-kooks have launched campaign sites,...

Recalling California OrthopoxyI was recently reading some commentary the California Gubernatorial Recall Election, and came across this phrase: “a pox on the purists.” I thought a moment, and asked myself: which ones? The conservative purists, or the moderate purists? The principle purists, or the pragmatism purists? The grass roots purists, or the RNC purists? There is a deep disingenuousness among some Republicans and Freepers on these matters. Their a priori position is that their world view represents "realism," therefore any other view is invalid. They argue from presumption and castigate those who differ, while failing to understand they are as...
