More than 600 years ago, someone intricately folded, sealed and posted a letter that was never delivered. Now, scientists have digitally "unfolded" this and other similarly locked letters found in a 17th-century trunk in The Hague, using X-rays. For centuries prior to the invention of sealed envelopes, sensitive correspondence was protected from prying eyes through complex folding techniques called "letterlocking," which transformed a letter into its own secure envelope. However, locked letters that survive to the present are fragile and can be opened physically only by slicing them to pieces. The new X-ray method offers researchers a non-invasive alternative, maintaining...

Poll workers in Wisconsin may have unlawfully altered thousands of mail-in ballots due to unlawful guidance from the state’s election commission, according to a report. Should the ballot not contain the a witness address, the ballot is disallowed and must be returned to the voter so that the witness can provide that information.

I once again call upon the collective genius of all the FReeper minds, this time to help me solve a computer issue. I recently had no choice but to upgrade from the PC I've been using since -- wait for it -- 2000 (or thereabouts). Why did I wait so long? Well, because I've tweaked and customized it over the years to do exactly what I want it to do. But I had to face the reality that it's too slow to do things properly anymore, and more and more online stuff just doesn't work on the old XP machine....

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – The Department of Homeland Security will soon be using a laser at airports that can detect everything about you from over 160-feet away. Gizmodo reports a scanner that could read people at the molecular level has been invented. This laser-based scanner – which can be used 164-feet away — could read everything from a person’s adrenaline levels, to traces of gun powder on a person’s clothes, to illegal substances — and it can all be done without a physical search. It also could be used on multiple people at a time, eliminating random searches at airports. The...

FR, I recently converted my computer to 32-bit Windows 7 from XP. When I installed my HP 3052 print/scanner/fax it was able to print but I lost the fax and scan capabilities. No, the driver for Windows Vista won't work. The HP 'Universal' driver just supports printing. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and if there was some way to make this work like maybe with a substitute driver? Thank you for your help!

An undercover TSA agent was able to get through security at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with a handgun during testing of the enhanced-imaging body scanners, according to a high-ranking, inside source at the Transportation Security Administration. The source said the undercover agent carried a pistol in her undergarments when she put the body scanners to the test. The officer successfully made it through the airport's body scanners every time she tried, the source said. "In this case, where they had a test, and it was just a dismal failure as I'm told," said Larry Wansley, former head of security at...
  • Introducing the modesty scanners:New software in U.S. airports after outrage

    02/03/2011 7:14:55 AM PST · by rawhide · 14 replies
America was outraged when full-body scanners, which showed revealing pictures of air passengers, were introduced. Now, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has bowed to pressure to introduce new software that will show just the outline of the person travelling. The new scanner software, being trialled in three U.S. airports, will reveal any abnormalities on a generic male or female figure that looks similar to a chalk outline In another change the new software will only alert staff when a questionable object is detected and those being scanned will be able to see their image on a screen as they exit...

Federal officials claim radiation risks from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration's new full-body scanners are low, but several scientists are calling on the administration to rethink whether the numbers really add up. The TSA says the radiation from its security scans amounts to about a thousandth of the amount a patient receives from a standard chest X-ray, or an amount "equivalent to two minutes of flying on an airplane." But a physics professor at Arizona State University in Tempe not only conducted his own study, finding the radiation exposure 10 times what the TSA estimates, but also argues that the...
