PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — A couple hundred die-hard supporters of John Fetterman’s campaign stood in the pouring rain Saturday morning in a Pittsburgh parking lot, a scene reminiscent of the former President Donald Trump supporters who stood in the rain for his rally in Greensburg in May. They were all waiting to hear him spell out the reasons why he should be the next senator from Pennsylvania. The event began with the special guest former Steelers running back Franco Harris, who delivered a mellow 90-second speech on why Fetterman should win in November. “Very, very important race in Pennsylvania," said Harris....

According to the FDA, there is a multi-state outbreak of Cyclospora infections potentially linked to salads containing those ingredients. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can affect the intestinal tract and cause diarrhea. It is treated with antibiotics. As a result, Giant Eagle, Walmart and Aldi have issued recalls for several Fresh Express salad products. Customers should throw those products away immediately. The recalled products are clearly marked with the letter “Z” at the beginning of the Product Code, which is located on the upper right-hand corner of the front of the package. Those products containing iceberg lettuce, red cabbage...

We recently had a request for a ‘vegetable salad’ thread. One of my favorites is Panzanella, or Tuscan Bread Salad. A search will bring up many variations, and a lot of them use only tomatoes, cukes, and onion. I like to make it with those things; but also add some chopped Giardiniera (you can find it jarred in the grocery store) fresh red and green peppers, capers - and sometimes chopped pepperoni or salami. Chef John of ‘Food Wishes’ has a technique for making sure your bread doesn’t go all soggy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-Rn9DN3IjULooking around, I found some interesting roasted vegetable salads,...

Mystery food poisoning traced to salads 24 March 2008 NewScientist.com news service Analysis of 2006 spinach poisoning outbreak in the US The rate of food poisoning from salad greens in the US is hugely outstripping increases in their consumption. Three large outbreaks in 2006 that between them made 300 Americans sick were traced to bulk-prepared greens. "For most outbreaks, investigators are unable to pinpoint where contamination occurred," says Michael Lynch of the US Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. Whatever the cause, increased consumption is not it. Between 1986 and 1995, Americans ate 17 per cent more leafy greens...

On Sept. 13, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta learned that the raw leafy green was the prime suspect in a spate of virulent Escherichia coli infections. The next day, the Food and Drug Administration advised consumers not to eat any bagged fresh spinach. Two weeks later, the FDA announced that it had traced the tainted greens to one California company that bags spinach under several brand...
