Mystery food poisoning traced to salads

Analysis of 2006 spinach poisoning outbreak in the US The rate of food poisoning from salad greens in the US is hugely outstripping increases in their consumption.
Three large outbreaks in 2006 that between them made 300 Americans sick were traced to bulk-prepared greens. "For most outbreaks, investigators are unable to pinpoint where contamination occurred," says Michael Lynch of the US Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia.
Whatever the cause, increased consumption is not it. Between 1986 and 1995, Americans ate 17 per cent more leafy greens than in the previous decade, yet poisonings rose 60 per cent. In the decade between 1996 and 2005, poisonings rose 39 per cent, against a consumption hike of just 9 per cent.
Lynch, who presented his team's results on Monday in Atlanta at an international conference on emerging infectious diseases, says more research is needed to explain the discrepancy.

That’s it. I’m sticking with Twinkies.
Me, too. The upside of this issue is a lot of starving vegetarians.
No puedo imaginar ninguna razón por la que ésta debe suceder.
some people are vegetarians not because they love animals but because they hate plants
From now on it’s all meat salads for me!
I suppose it would be politically incorrect to mention the fact that more produce is being picked by migrant workers here illegaly that did not go through any health checks ?
You may want this one for the garden thread.
Spinach is the easiest plant to grow inside.

Maybe some salads are “prepared” Jesse Jackson style.
I sure went through baby spinach withdrawal back then. I have at least three salads a week based on baby spinach. I have really come to like the taste.
Solution: irradiation. Plus the softly glowing lettuce will cut down on your lighting bills.
Good call. No one ever got sick on Twinkies ... except for an occasional overdose.
Wash hands
Wash food
Helps!
What about that guy who balmed his murderous rampage on twinkies ? He was a San Fransisco supervisor, and I think his "twinkie defense" worked. Does that count ?
