Trial watchers, sociologists and even FX’s show “People v OJ Simpson” have argued that the jurors in O.J. Simpson’s murder case acquitted him as payback for the Rodney King beating. And in ESPN’s new event series, “O.J.: Made in America,” one juror finally comes out and says it. (snip)Interviewer: That was payback. Bess: Uh-huh. Interviewer: Do you think that’s right? At that question, she holds up her hands.

Authorities in Tennessee are preparing for the release of police officer body cam footage of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died three days after a traffic stop on Jan. 7. This is a failing of basic humanity towards another individual," Davis said, saying the five officers and others who were involved in his death "failed our community, and they failed the Nichols family....

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – It was three decades ago Wednesday that one of the most defining moments in Los Angeles history took place, changing the face of the city forever. On March 3, 1991, a plumber named George Holliday recorded four white LAPD officers using batons, Tasers, feet and fists to beat a Black man later identified as Rodney King. Holliday had been asleep in his Lake View Terrace apartment when he was awakened by a commotion that prompted him to grab his Sony Handycam and record the attack outside his apartment building.

Philadelphia’s interim police commissioner has apologized for wearing a T-shirt in the 1990s that mocked the notorious Los Angeles police beating of Rodney King, saying she’s “profoundly sorry.” The photo, from 1994, shows Christine M. Coulter, who is white, wearing a shirt that read: “L.A.P.D We Treat You Like a King,” a pointed slogan stemming from the 1991 videotaped beating of King by LAPD cops, whose acquittals sparked riots a year later. An anonymous source sent the photo to the Philadelphia Inquirer in late August. Coulter, the first female commissioner of the 6,500-member department, said during a city council hearing...

One of the largest police force's in the UK is considering letting Muslim officers wear burkas in an attempt to boost diversity. West Midlands Police has said it will discuss letting the traditional Islamic dress - which covers the entirety of a woman's face and body - to become part of Muslim female officers' uniform. At a recent meeting, Chief Constable David Thompson, said he would consider employing staff who wear a burka as he looks to increase black and minority ethnic (BME) officers in the region to 30 per cent.

There is an expression in police work: “If you weren’t there you don’t know what happened.” Cops know you need all available information to make a good judgment. When a cop sees a lady “sawed in half” on a stage he/she understands that what is being presented is a carefully crafted illusion. They understand that seeing a brief video, even one that was “shown on television thousands of times” doesn’t necessarily provide proof of what happened. The Rodney King case brought acquittals for the police when the first jury saw all of the available video; but a conviction when the...

It has been nearly a quarter of a century since the bloody “Rodney King” riots ripped through Los Angeles. In the years since those horrific events in 1991, police departments across the country have been faced with numerous racially-charged altercations – including many involving police shootings of civilian suspects. During that same time, American taxpayers at all levels of government have seen hundreds of billions of their dollars spent to improve law enforcement training, procedures, and equipment. But, have we learned anything? If what is unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri following the August 9th fatal shooting of unarmed, black teenager Michael...

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Revolutionary Communist Party USA has announced a "Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America," and members say they are planning for a "revolution" against capitalism, with violence if necessary. The "present capitalist-imperialist system" should be replaced with a "radically new economic system," they say. Carl Dix, a founding member and spokesman, believes that the federal government bailouts, under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, are just one instance where they propped up what he calls the "capitalist class." His party is "building a revolution" and under the proposed constitution all "natural resources...

Dear Ann Landers: On April 30 of this year, the L.A. riots were in full swing. I was with a couple of friends, and we got carried away with all the excitement. One guy suggested that we join the rest of the crowd and loot a Korean dry cleaners. The scene was incredible. There were about 20 people grabbing as much stuff as they could before the store was set on fire. That`s when I saw this great leather coat hanging not two yards from me. I went to grab it, and at the very same moment ``Wanda`` reached for...

I grew up in a blue collar, Democratic family. We have been Democratic on both sides of the family, at least since the beginning of the 20th century. I never questioned what decisions my party representatives made as a very young man, say 18 years old. I presumed (wrongly) that these elected officials would always do what was right. I also accepted as indisputable fact that , well of course the Republicans were always, always in the wrong. The republicans were greedy and 'keeping us down'. You can imagine my surprise when, as a college freshman in 1975, I heard...

NEW YORK (TRNS) – Members of New York City’s Democratic congressional delegation gathered outside Lower Manhattan’s Federal District Courthouse Monday to back a potential Department of Justice civil rights investigation of George Zimmerman over the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in 2012. A report published last week by the Miami Herald revealed FBI investigators found little proof Zimmerman was driven by racism in Martin’s shooting, the legislators assembled Monday insisted his motives be subject to greater scrutiny. “We respect the jury’s verdict, but the state prosecutorial chapter has now been closed, and a new federal chapter has been opened.” said...

The city of Sanford, Fla. is bracing for reaction to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, including preparing for riots the likes of which haven’t been seen since the Rodney King verdict was announced in 1992. The city has spent months preparing for what may develop after the jury verdict is announced, and pastors and members of the clergy are even lending a hand to keep tensions from escalating out of control. According to a report from CNN’s David Mattingly, local pastors have been sitting in the courtroom observing the trial, and the Sanford Police Department has sent officers...

When the Accountability Review Board’s report on Benghazi came out, last December, John Bolton noted that the State Dept. was basically investigating itself, and suggested that their assertions might not hold up to scrutiny. It looks like the ARB´s findings are indeed not holding up to scrutiny. The report is being savaged by the attorneys who are representing material witnesses who they say were ignored by the ARB. (Snip) Toensing told Geraldo that “the things that her client will be saying will be contradictory to what the administration’s scenario was.” Di Genova promised that “what will come out of the

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A video shows Eddie Lojak this past Saturday — his nose is broken, he has a concussion, a broken rib, chipped teeth, stitches across his face and a chunk of skin ripped from his tongue. Those injuries happened after a morning of drinking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and ended with a run-in with Pittsburgh Police.Cops came up behind me and shoved me down as hard as he could,” Lojak said. “Face first onto the pavement and then they all jumped on me.” That’s where the cell phone video picks up the incident. It shows a police...

The Los Angeles Police Department ceased to be an active force for justice on March 4, 1991, when George Holliday turned over his amateur video of Rodney King’s arrest to the Los Angeles TV station KTLA. With tape in hand, the media began what the late Christopher Dorner might call a surge of “unconventional and asymmetrical warfare” against the LAPD and police departments everywhere. As in the Trayvon Martin case, the media edited and presented the tape to reinforce its favorite template: evil white racists oppress innocent minority. I say “asymmetrical” because in the King case, unlike the Martin case,...
