According to Dr. David Needle and colleagues at the University of New Hampshire College of Life Sciences and Agriculture, note a mysterious respiratory illness that has sickened at least hundreds and perhaps as many as thousands of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection that may be very good at evading the canine immune system, as well at least some antibiotics. I moved into a great basement apartment a few months ago, AND I work with kids. Around that time I picked up a cold, with chest congestion, sinus pressure, etc. My doctor gave me two hours of tests, including for TB (I used to work with the homeless) and cancer--X-Rays, the works. In the end she said I had a cold. After much research, I have come to find that the real source of my trouble MAY be that my basement apartment, which leaks when the snow melts, may be contributing to my woes with mildew. I have no previous...

Deborah Reeve, a 17-year paramedic, died on March 15 of mesothelioma, a lung cancer associated with exposure to asbestos, her family said. Reeve developed a cough in late 2003 and retired at the end of 2004 after becoming too ill to work. Her doctors and family say her cancer was caused by exposure to toxic dust from the World Trade Center site. City health officials say it's...

NEW YORK (AP) -- James Zadroga spent 16 hours a day toiling in the World Trade Center ruins for a month, breathing in debris-choked air. Timothy Keller said he coughed up bits of gravel from his lungs after the towers fell on September 11, 2001. Felix Hernandez spent days at the site helping to search for victims. All three men died in the past seven months of what their families and colleagues say were persistent respiratory illnesses directly caused by their work at Ground Zero. While thousands of people who either worked at or lived near the site have reported...
