Reggie White was one of the few truly great athletes who transformed his game and changed the people around him. "Where do we begin? Great player, great person, great teammate," Brett Favre said as he reflected on the legacy of his friend who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, a final, fitting tribute to the most honored and perhaps most feared defensive end in NFL history. "It goes without saying that he's deserving of this, and just a shame he passed this young." White, who suffered from sleep apnea and sarcoidosis, died a little...

DETROIT (AP) -- Troy Aikman made it into the Pro Football Hall of Fame's biggest class in years. The guy he threw to _ Michael Irvin _ will have to wait once again. Reggie White, Warren Moon, Harry Carson, John Madden and Rayfield Wright also were elected Saturday. Not since 2001 had the maximum number of candidates been chosen. Emmitt Smith, who joined with Aikman and Irvin to win three Super Bowls for the Dallas Cowboys, had campaigned vigorously for his two former teammates. But Irvin, plagued by off-the-field troubles in recent years, was left out in his second try....

CANTON, Ohio -- Reggie White, a two-time NFL defensive player of the year who died last year at 43, heads a list of players, coaches and contributors eligible for induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. White is eligible for the first time along with quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Warren Moon. Other first-year eligible players include running back Thurman Thomas, wide receiver Andre Reed and offensive lineman Dermontti Dawson. GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The Green Bay Packers will retire Reggie White's No. 92 on Sunday, and coach Mike Sherman challenged his team to live up to his legacy. "A lot of guys here didn't get a chance to play with Reggie or even get to know Reggie," said center Mike Flanagan, one of a handful of Packers who played with White in the 1990s. "So, he just wanted to let some guys know what Reggie White meant to this organization, what he meant to the NFL and what he meant to this planet as a human being." Brett Favre...

GREEN BAY, Wis. (May 31, 2005) -- The Green Bay Packers will retire Reggie White's number at halftime ceremonies of their home opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 18. Team president Bob Harlan said he had told White before his death last December that he wanted to add his No. 92 to the retired numbers listed in the north end zone at Lambeau Field. "He was thrilled. He kept saying what an honor that would be," Harlan said. White, who suffered from a respiratory ailment, died Dec. 26 at age 43. He joined the Packers in 1993 in one...

On the field, Reggie White was known as the "Minister of Defense"—a sort of doomsday prophet for opposing quarterbacks. He brought a love for Jesus onto the field, literally holding prayer meetings there after games. For a short time, he held the NFL record for career sacks with 198. He sued the NFL for free agency rights in the early 1990s, clearing the way for the league's current system. He promised to bring a Super Bowl trophy back to Green Bay. In 1997 he delivered. But for all his accolades—and his legendary ministry to inner-city communities—Reggie White's legacy in death...

Recent polls show that blacks are more likely than whites to oppose gay marriage. As my colleague Darryl Fears reported in The Washington Post just before the November election, "A study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life showed that since 2000, black Protestants have become far less likely than other Protestant groups to believe that gays should have equal rights. Black Protestant support for gay rights dipped to a low of 40 percent this year, down from 65 percent in 1996 and 59 percent in 1992." One of the reasons more blacks don't vote Republican, some analysts...

Professional football has achieved such popularity that its greatest players all become cultural figures of sorts. Television ads and other commercial interests burn some of these images into the national psyche: “Mean” Joe Greene tossing his game jersey to a boy in a Coke commercial; the Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle,” and so forth. Yet for a football player to achieve something more — to exert a true and lasting impact on American culture and spirituality — is so rare that arguably only one man can rightly claim such a legacy: Reggie White. His death on December 26 at the...

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Packers have changed their policy and no longer will fly U.S. flags at Lambeau Field at half-staff to honor members of the organization, as they did after the death of Reggie White. White's death in North Carolina Sunday prompted team president Bob Harlan to order the flags lowered in his honor. White played for the Packers from 1993-98 and helped them to a Super Bowl championship. Under the new policy announced Wednesday, the team said that when paying respect in such a case, it will lower a Packers flag, not the U.S. flag....

SOVO BLOG Ex-NFL star, anti-gay preacher, dies Former NFL star Reggie White died on Sunday at the age of 43. He was one of the National Football League's top defensive players for a decade. He was also a minister, which led to his nickname, the Minister of Defense. And, White made certain everyone knew his thoughts about gay people. White was invited to give a speech to the Wisconsin Legislature in 1998. Here are some of the highlights of that speech: White said the United States has gotten away from God, in part by allowing homosexuality to "run rampant." Homosexuality...

I was shocked like millions of others on Sunday as the breaking news unfolded on NFL Countdown. Reggie White had died of a heart attack.. Much has been said about his formidable talent on the football field and equally as much about the beauty of this shortened life off the field. What a life well lived. This was a man and Reverend who worked and ministered with inner-city children and many others wherever God placed him. He gave of himself not for accolades or personal adulation, but to fulfill the great commission. Despite the wonderful things he did, despite the...

Some war veterans in the Green Bay area were offended Sunday when the Packers flew the U.S. flag at half-staff at Lambeau Field in honor of the late Reggie White, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported Tuesday. Ron Sager of Appleton, founder of the Fox Valley Vietnam Veterans Association, said the honor is reserved for those who have served or made a sacrifice for their country. "It does cheapen the reason" for flying the flag at half-staff, Sager told the paper. "Obviously (Packers president] Bob Harlan was thinking that this is something he could use to pay tribute to White,...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--He was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was elected to the Pro Bowl a record 13 straight times, set a Super Bowl record with three sacks and retired in 2000 as the NFL's all-time leader in sacks. But Reggie White's life as a football legend and unashamed proclaimer of the Gospel -- which earned him the nickname "Minister of Defense" -- ended abruptly Dec. 26 at age 43. The cause of White's death was not immediately known, although he suffered from a respiratory ailment that affected his sleep, according to the Associated Press. Because of...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - NFL great Reggie White may have died because of a respiratory disease combined with other health problems, a preliminary autopsy report said Monday. White most likely had a condition that affected the amount of air his lungs could hold, resulting in "fatal cardiac arrhythmia," said Dr. Mike Sullivan, the medical examiner for Mecklenburg County and a forensic pathologist. The report issued by Sullivan's office also said sleep apnea may have been a factor. The report is a preliminary one; determining a final cause of death could take up to three months, Sullivan's office said. White died...

Reggie White's deep interest in religion appeared to go in a different direction after his playing days ended. ESPN's Andrea Kremer had spoken with White several times recently about his interest in studying Hebrew. Kremer was planning to tape interviews with White about the subject next week. "There were some things that he came to question in Christianity," Kremer said yesterday from Los Angeles. "He wanted to learn for himself how to read the scripture, and the only way to do that is study Hebrew. "Reggie is someone who is true to his word. He didn't want to be taking...

Cris Carter received a call early Sunday morning from Sara White. She was delivering the sad news that her husband Reggie had died at 43. "Once Reggie's death made the news reports, I started receiving calls at home from guys who were getting ready to play football today -- from Troy Vincent, from Derrick Brooks, from Robert Griffith," Carter said. "These are younger guys who never played with Reggie. I'm watching New Orleans right now. Darren Howard has a tribute on his uniform. He's another guy who never played with Reggie. "That's a testament to an impact Reggie had that...

Reggie White, a fearsome defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers who was one of the great players in NFL history, died Sunday. White turned 43 on Dec. 19. Through the family pastor, Sara White confirmed her husband's death, saying that she believes White died of respiratory failure related to his sleep apnea. An autopsy is to be performed to determine the exact cause of death, which was not immediately known. "Today our beloved husband, father and friend passed away," Sara White said through the pastor.
