CANTON, Ohio -- Reggie White, a two-time NFL defensive player of the year who died last year at 43, heads a list of players, coaches and contributors eligible for induction in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
White is eligible for the first time along with quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Warren Moon. Other first-year eligible players include running back Thurman Thomas, wide receiver Andre Reed and offensive lineman Dermontti Dawson.
NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime owners Art Modell and Ralph Wilson are on the preliminary list that includes five former head coaches and 11 contributors.
A member of the NFL's 75th anniversary team, White was named to the Pro Bowl a record 13 straight times from 1986-98. He earned top defensive player honors in 1987 and 1998. He retired in 2000 as the career sacks leader with 198, a mark later passed by Bruce Smith.
White, who played with Philadelphia, Green Bay and Carolina, died on Dec. 26 in Cornelius, N.C.
From a preliminary list, Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who will advance as semifinalists. That list will be trimmed to 13 candidates, who will join veterans committee nominees John Madden and Rayfield Wright as finalists.
The Class of 2006 will be announced on Feb. 4, the day before the Super Bowl in Detroit.
Aikman and Moon do not deserve to be in the HoF, unless the HoF is for any player slightly above mediocre. Might was well put Vinny Testaverde in the HoF.
Put Ray Guy in the Hall of Fame!
Warren Moon does deserve to be in.
It's the PRO FOOTBALL HOF, not the NFL HOF, so the CFL counts.
* third-highest career total passing yards in NFL history
* fifth-highest career TD passes in NFL history
* fourth-highest career total NFL 3,000-yards passing seasons, with 9
* had ridiculous single game explosions: 7 NFL games with 400-yards passing, and 49 with 300-yards passing, and a 527-yard game against the Chiefs.
* 9 NFL Pro Bowls
* had dominant seasons with 3 different NFL teams: 4690 yards for the 1991 Oilers, 4264 yards for the 1994 Vikes, and 3678 yards for the 1997 Seahawks
* greatest player in CFL history
* 23 years as a pro QB
Hmm.. ok with stats like that maybe I was wrong. I mostly remember Moon as being a big choker at clutch moments.
He has a better resume than Peyton Manning and people are ready to send him to Canton when he hangs up his cleats.
Oh, and four 4,000-yard NFL seasons.
I'd send Aikman, Moon, Reed and Thomas, and White. They're all excellent.
Are you really this dumb, or are you just joshin' us?
Both of these QBs should be in Hall.
Just personal opinion. I'd add Ken Stabler, Drew Pearson, Russ Francis, Fred Dean, Charles Haley, L.C. Greenwood, "Too Tall" Jones, Lemar Parrish, Donnie Shell, Ray Guy.
I know that's more than 13 but my vote doesn't count anyways. I fell in love with football in the 70s, so I'm biased to the 60s - 80s decades. They're the players I know best.
Check into rehab immediately.
I couldn't agree more.
As for Modell, he'll probably get in ... even though I hate his guts for stealing the Brownies (and winning a Super Bowl in the process). His name is mud in Ohio.
