CHICAGO - Mayor Lori Lightfoot says don't get COVID-19 for Christmas. She says everyone needs to take the virus seriously as people get together this weekend. Lightfoot says there's been a big surge in cases, and Chicago will reach the "high" level of cases either this week or next week. She says 47 Illinois counties are already there, and so is New York City and Los Angeles.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quietly dropped its universal masking recommendation for healthcare workers last week. According to the federal health agency, which updated its guidance September 23, the changes were made “to reflect the high levels of vaccine-and infection-induced immunity and the availability of effective treatments and prevention tools.” The guidance emphasizes that it is applicable to United States healthcare settings before clarifying that areas without high transmission levels of the Chinese coronavirus “could choose not to require universal source control.”

Hi Everyone, I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me to help with how to vote on the NJ ballot questions. The NJ Republican website is worthless. #1 regarding marijuana legalization is a no-brainer. It's a no. #2 regarding providing a property tax reduction for peacetime veterans is a little more difficult. I am always in favor of lowering taxes, and I also believe, as did Churchill when he quoted Milton, that "they also serve who only stand and wait". So I'm leaning towards yes on this. I think that enacting property tax relief for the elderly is...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday dropped its recommendation for travelers to quarantine for 14 days upon returning from trips overseas or out of state during the coronavirus pandemic. The CDC updated its guidelines on its website. Though the two-week recommendation was changed, the federal agency did caution travelers that they can still contract the novel coronavirus while traveling. “You may feel well and not have any symptoms, but you can still spread COVID-19 to others," the agency warns. "You and your travel companions (including children) may spread COVID-19 to other people including your family, friends,...

I've just been informed that my second Toro gas powered push lawn mower isn't worth fixing. I know very little about engines and such, so I'm taking the mechanic's word for it. The engine has thrown a rod (I can hear it) and the transmission's shot (that's why I took it to be repaired). Now I have to plead a little a lot guilty. I did not take proper care of the thing. I should have changed the oil, etc., etc. However, before I invest in another lawn mower (which I PROMISE I will take good care of) I thought...

My wife and I just got off the phone with our daughter who lives in the same area as Sarah Palin. Our daughter was heavily involved in the communities of Palmer and Wasilla when she was a branch manager of a locally owned bank in and around Anchorage and was involved in many small meetings with Sarah Palin, even though their individual contact was only casual. Both are super high achievers in the Anchorage area. I bring this up as an anecdotal story because my daughter is blonde, beautiful and a dynamic high achiever like Sarah Palin. But she is...

CorridorWatch, a Fayette County-based group that has been active in opposing the Trans-Texas Corridor plan, wants to go beyond the Sunset Advisory Commission’s recommended shakeup of state transportation leadership. The group, led by David and Linda Stall, recommends that TxDOT answer to an elected six-member board led by a chairman appointed by the governor. CorridorWatch makes it recommendation, along with various other reactions to the Sunset commission staff’s recent report on TxDOT, in written comments submitted as part of the sunset process. TxDOT, like all state agencies, “sunsets” after 12 years unless the Legislature acts to keep it alive. As...

/begin my translation Bush's Recommended Reading for his Associates-- a N. Korean Defector's MemoirYonhap News from Tokyo05/28/05U.S. President George W. Bush has read a memoir of a N. Korean defector, and was deeply disturbed by the atrocious human right situation in N. Korea. He also recommended it to his associates, according to May 28th issue of Yomiuri Shimbun(a major Japanese daily.) What Bush read is 'The Aquariums of Pyongyang: Ten Years In The North Korean Gulag' written by Kang Chol-hwan, a N. Korean defector and currently a reporter of Chosun Ilbo(a biggest S. Korean daily), and Pierre Rigoulot, a French journalist and a historian....

I've been a lurker for quite some time and finally felt compelled to solicit some sage advice from the combined 1,000+ years of experience represented on FreeRepublic. What are your opinions on the best conservative state (fiscally/politically/ideologically) to consider moving to? I've been a telecom techie in the Northeastern rat race for going on 2 decades and I'm finally looking to escape the mindset, pace and winters. Are there any safe havens in the mid/south-west where the state keeps its hands off your money, the population eyes the New York Times with suspicion and society evidences a more values-oriented, "traditional"...

Except for the presidential election, the most important election this year will take place on April 27 in Pennsylvania. No, it's not the "American Idol" finals. It's even more important than that. That's the day of the Republican primary pitting a great Republican, Pat Toomey, against the 74-year-old, Ira Einhorn-defending alleged "Republican," Arlen Specter.
