At last month’s Hollywood Radio & Television Society luncheon, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves shared his philosophy on the best way to promote his company: “under-promise and over-deliver.” A sound strategy—and one that his company’s news division unfortunately failed to heed with the carnivalesque launch of the CBS Evening News With Katie Couric. After a splashy, multimillion-dollar media campaign that sent Couric on a much ballyhooed nationwide “listening tour” and put her face on the front of every bus in New York City, some 13.6 million curious viewers sampled her maiden newscast Sept. 5. But Evening News has been trending...

Hi, everyone! Okay, I’ve been waiting to exhale for some time now…and I finally have!!! Last night was my one week anniversary…and the good news is, I’m still employed! (I think) I’ve had no problem sleeping in until 7 every morning…and I’m really really enjoying my new gig. There’s a lot of excitement here about trying new things, and the people with whom I’m working are terrific-smart and funny and very dedicated to putting on the best product we can. I’m still getting used to the half hour format, but it’s gratifying to see how much we can get in…I...

Couric Furious At CBS Suits. She Claims "They Are Stabbing Me In The Back." Katie Couric is not a happy camper this morning. The Suits at CBS have sent a strong signal throughout the news department that they have already lost faith in her. Here are the details as reported to me this AM from an old friend at West 57th. (Here beginnith the First Lesson.) “Promos” (short for promotional announcements) are advertisements a station or network runs to promote their own programs. A 30 second televised message advertising Veg-O-Matic is called a “spot” (short for spot advertisement.) A 30...

Katie Couric has been on the job at the "CBS Evening News” for little more than a week, but changes are already being made on her show – a doctor with ties to Couric has been hired as medical correspondent, replacing veteran Elizabeth Kaledin. The new face is Dr. Jonathan LaPook, a Manhattan gastroenterologist who helped arrange an on-camera colonoscopy for Couric on the "Today” show in 2000. ~snip~ Kaledin had covered the network beat for CBS since 1996. "The thing I’d feel most comfortable saying, which is the truth, is that I am heartbroken by the loss of my...

Well, I gave Katie a chance...an honest chance. I watched her debut and I watched her tonight, since Rush was on. Not a damn thing has changed except the gender of the person in the anchor chair. The leftist drivel is a joke. Tonight, perky Katie apparently believes a 5 or 6 year old video tape of Useless never-bin-Laiden is a triumph of terror over Bush's liberation of 50 million Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq. The BIG LEAD of the night was something like "On a day when the President says we're safer in the war on terror, Al...

The overnight Nielsen Ratings are in, and they are a disaster for Katie Couric. Couric's CBS Evening News was beaten by ABC WNT in New York, Chicago and other major markets After all the hype, CBS and the other networks had expected a "honeymoon" lasting for at least a month as viewers sampled Couric's new show. It lasted one night. Although she eeked out a national ratings win, the big cities have already abandoned her. In places such as New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, where the big advertising dollars are spent, last night's CBS/Couric ratings free-fall mean one thing; Viewers...

Rush Limbaugh delivered the "freeSpeech" segment on Thursday's CBS Evening News. Anchor Katie Couric set up him up: “With the fifth anniversary of 9/11 coming up, the topic tonight is the war on terror. And there may be no one more opinionated on the subject than radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.” Limbaugh began: “My friends., it's time to face a hard cold fact: Militant Islam wants to kill us just because we're alive and don't believe as they do....Now, this threat is not just go away because we choose to ignore it.” He soon zeroed in on the problem:...

No one should be forced to watch that commie uh, I mean Katie, in order to hear Limbaugh, so here you go!

One of the questions everyone asks a new anchor is, "What's your sign off going to be?" Walter Cronkite had the most famous nightly farewell, "And that's the way it is." Edward R. Murrow used, "Good night and good luck." Well, it's a new era here at The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and Katie thinks maybe you folks on the other side of the screen might have some good ideas for what her own sign-off should be. If nothing else, it will be a lot of fun reading your ideas and, who knows, maybe one will actually stick.

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Let me deal with a rumor that circulated over the Internet. It hit the Drudge Report, I forget, I guess it was sometime Saturday or Sunday, the rumor being that I am helping to launch or welcome Katie Couric to the CBS Evening News tonight or this week. The reporting on this was somewhat confusing and sketchy based on how you read it. I had people e-mailing me all weekend long who were taking different things out of it. It's amazing to study this. This is a little aside, but it was an amazing thing to study...

Commentary: CBS should shelve the cute stuff and stick to ... the news NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - "I am very happy to be with you tonight." With those un-momentous words Tuesday night, Katie Couric, 49, was off and running as the new anchor of "The CBS Evening News." At last the hype was over and the former star of NBC's "Today" show would have an opportunity to prove herself as a serious evening-newscaster. She dropped the ball. At its worst, the show reinforced all of the worries of grizzled veteran journalists. This wasn't all Couric's fault. She was, as billed,...

KATIE COURIC last night underwent her second on-air colonoscopy. Watching the procedure was not a horribly painful event. Nor was it an experience I would volunteer to repeat any time soon. For her very first night as CBS News diva, Katie spent a half-hour looking as if she desperately had to go potty. Her back was so stiff as she looked into the camera, pop-eyed and self-conscious, I feared it would snap. Her face was Botoxed beyond normal human endurance, proving that even pampered, overpaid news babes possess the courage to suffer for their art. And for the first time...

FUELING UP: Cold drink in hand, Katie Couric arrives at 10:30 a.m. yesterday for her first day on the job at CBS's Midtown offices. Photo: Star Traks First of all, the "freeSpeech" segment has got to go. And they should ban all black-and-white footage of old newscasts. And most important, Katie Couric should think up her own signoff. She's a big girl. And at the prices they're paying her, she shouldn't have to ask viewers to do the work for her...........she really doesn't have that much to do as an anchor. She introduced a few stories, interviewed a friendly...
